If you liked this movie, please learn more about the white saviour compelx and how harmful it is, especially when one guy decides to single-handedly take on the LRA (one assumes that this is the group they are fighting with, it is pretty nonspecific about geography and history). Furthermore, I could not believe the violence depicted against Black bodies, especially children, in this movie -- far and beyond what you would see done to white children on film and purely for shock value. It is dehumanizing in the extreme, especially on top of the limited speaking roles given to Black actors and almost none to named Black actors. And even if you were to take this movie at face value and ignore its engagement with colonial and white supremacist themes, it is a terrible religious movie. There is also almost no religious thinking, which is utterly strange (I guess based on the real guy, who apparently engages with Christianity at the most superficial level?). There is no true conversion (character development at least?? he starts and ends as the shittiest person ever), no engagement with tradition, no humility or learning, no community beyond the ones that services his ego/whims/ravings. Just glorification of extreme violence in the service of one man's mission to completely misunderstand Christianity and morality. I say all this as a non-Christian. Shockingly bad, even for a bad movie club (which is why I watched this in the first place). Mistake. Also the daughter character is unintelligible. Michael Shannon is interesting.
