I believe there is a fantastic 15 minute short film that is buried in this film, but at its current length, I have a hard time recommending it. So many good ideas overstay their welcome, and when you're going the "no dialogue" route, what was already a slow paced film can start to feel glacial. Not to put too fine a point on it, but I struggled to stay awake. And I wasn't watching late. I was drifting off before 8 PM to these trippy visuals. Speaking of the visuals, they are legitimately fantastic. Watching The Assassins boots as he takes his first steps out of his drop pod had me thoroughly engrossed. The level of detail is ridiculously impressive, and the creativity on display in the various character, creature, and set designs is absolutely top tier. But all the visual creativity in the world won't get you too far in a narrative driven medium. There just wasn't enough story for me. And what little story there was seemed to pride itself on being opaque, as if begging to be the subject of some 10,000 word deconstruction by the next generation of film snobs.

I don't know if there was a story. if this has a deeper meaning. Or if Ol' Phil just lost the plot after letting all those dinosaurs run amock all those years ago but man, this was amazing. I don't care if I didn't get it. Sometimes it's just about feeling and I haven't felt this disturbed since Eraserhead. Loved it.

Not for me. If you are the type of person who watched Heavy Metal and enjoyed it, maybe this will work for you...but not my taste at all

Like when toddlers are left alone in the kitchen: what comes out is interesting but a huge mess. As someone who prefers story-driven films, I found the lack of any kind of narrative disappointing (though easy to sleep through). That said, the technical achievement of this stop-motion orgy of shit is undeniable and merits attention.

As a technical artistic piece demonstrating the expressive power of stop motion cinematography, it is a triumph. As a story, it is a eighth grade goth kid sitting in the back of class, doodling their inner turmoil and profound nihilism. Most of the metaphors relating to our world (e.g., work, medici More

Wow, but the quality of the stop-motion animation in this is breathtaking. On a big screen, the detailed movement of characters and settings alike; the clever use of light and shade look superb - it's really quite an astonishing piece of art to enjoy. The story itself is almost incidental - it centr More

Mad God is a terrifying triumph to animation. It is mesmerizing, unique, and disgusting through and through. The ruined city in the film is coated in these overwhelming layers of grunge and unknown fluids that practically ooze onto the audience. The film seems to draw homage from the Labyrinth Cenob More
