Classic film that definitely feels different watching as an adult compared to being a child, I remembered it very differently.

Overall it was good, obviously as a children's film some stuff you can tell that it was for the kids, the humor etc.

Even though I enjoyed it, it wasn't amazing or breathtaking. I look forward to reliving the sequels.

Very funny animated film about animals who "escape" to end up being stuck somewhere else! Great voice actors, colourful scenery and you cannot beat the lemurs!!!

One of the funniest computer animated films I ever saw: some animals from the "NY Zoo" are released to an exotic island. Now they have to survive "in the wild" and on their own. Hilarious!

Madagascar is not a timeless classic, but it’s not that bad of a movie either. Sure the dated plugged product placement and random pop culture references are not in any way excusable, but what the film lacks in storytelling more than makes up for in charming and lovable characters, interesting animation, and a surprisingly great compositional score from Hanz Zimmer. This film is a guilty pleasure in my eyes, even though I am starting to realize that there are many better-animated movies that do have more engaging stories and more appealing animation. This is a movie I do have a soft spot for, even if there are other Dreamworks movies that I would prefer to watch over this one.

This is proto Illumination, it’s not the Dreamworks that gave us _Shrek_. The script is so dumb and watered down script that even the target audience will know where everything’s headed after the second scene. The animation is technically and artistically incompetent, nobody in their right mind would guess this came out after _Finding Nemo_ and _The Incredibles_. There’s zero personality to the design and the visuals generally look blocky and unpolished. Music and score are used in a way that’s undeniably kitschy, it’s constantly telling the viewer how to feel in the most lazy, obvious way. The voice actors add nothing to these roles, you could replace any actor and it wouldn’t make a difference, because not even Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Stiller can sell these lowbrow jokes in any way. Even the occasional joke aimed at the older audience (such as the _American Beauty_ reference) falls flat. The only stuff that’s moderately effective is anything involving the penguins, despite the whole bit being a clear _Oceans 11_ rip-off (again, we can blame the music for making that connection way too obvious).

A group of lifelong zoo captives, buddies despite their hunter-vs-hunted natural relationship, arrange a prison break and try to find themselves, for better or worse, in the wild. Madagascar is a rough early effort from DreamWorks animation and, for the most part, it's a waste of vocal talent. Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and Sacha Baron Cohen all chip in on a rudimentary plot that fails to accurately hit either heartstrings or funnybones. The characters themselves are strong, a well-developed mix of distinct shapes and colorful personalities that would go on to blossom in later installments, but here they're mere saplings at the mercy of a flat, played-out storyline.

Even the animation has aged poorly, playing more like a student's demo reel than a multi-million dollar major studio production. It's tempting to give that a pass, given how far technology has come in the ten years since, but Pixar had already released Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo and The Incredibles by this time, and those all hold up wonderfully. An also-ran in all respects, it's got missed potential by the boatloads, but not much more.

I think it's one of the best animated movies they did. They voice acting is great, I like the simple style animation. A movie like this shouldn't look realistic anyway. And althought they are not the main act the penguins and the Lemurs are the real stars of this movie.
