_Madame_ is like your grandmother's stew, too much broth and not enough meat but still very tasty.

What makes this documentary about the turbulent voyage of a young man who suspects he's gay when he's 8 and comes out to his family after university fascinating is the sheer volume of documentation. The son of a wannabe filmmaker who follows in his father's footsteps, Stéphane's entire life is richly documented with photographs, journals and, most importantly, an ocean of home movies detailing every period of his life.

Stéphane guides us along his journey using the video support as monuments and scenery in this sightseeing excursion, and it's a trip in the best possible way.

Unfortunately, this tour isn't long enough to last the entire time, so we take frequent detours into the life of his grandmother. She's certainly an interesting and charming woman, but her story is so far from Stéphane's that it seems forced on us like a museum visit when we just want to spend time walking the city streets.

Still, the overall experience is enriching thanks to the impeccably edited visuals and interesting storyline so for those interested in the evolution of a child into a gay man / activist, this is the documentary for you.
