Like lobster with truffles served in a styrofoam box and paper sack, Marinette takes something super classy and delivers it in the most mundane way possible.

I wasn't supposed to see a film today but my weekend in Porto was scrapped when Transavia cancelled my flight out of the blue (literally), so I had a free morning and chose this movie based solely on the fact that it stars Garance Marillier, who I loved in Grave/ Raw.

When I realized the film is based on French female soccer star Marinette Pichon (whom I didn't know of before this screening), I was rather pleased with myself and my choice because I'm a supporter of women in everything and very much pro LGBTQ+.

Sadly, Ms Pichon's fascinating life is lifted chapter and verse from her autobiography and is presented as straightforward as a hetero who doesn't look back, i.e., setting / conflict / resolution, setting / conflict / resolution, setting / conflict / resolution...

It seems to me someone as unique, talented and inspirational as Marinette Pichon deserves a biopic of the same caliber.

On a side note, there is a sad irony that Ms Pichon's futile struggle to acquire professional status for female soccer players in France is currently reflected by the refusal of French television channels to buy broadcasting rights for the upcoming feminine World Cup. Tragic!
