The Martins family are optimistic dreamers, quietly leading their lives in the margins of a major Brazilian city following the disappointing inauguration of a far-right extremist president. A lower-middle-class Black family, they feel the strain of their new reality as the political dust settles. Tércia, the mother, reinterprets her world after an unexpected encounter leaves her wondering if she’s cursed. Her husband, Wellington, puts all of his hopes into the soccer career of their son, Deivinho, who reluctantly follows his father’s ambitions despite secretly aspiring to study astrophysics and colonize Mars. Meanwhile, their older daughter, Eunice, falls in love with a free-spirited young woman and ponders whether it’s time to leave home.

What is so beautiful about this piece is that it is EXTREMELY Brazilian. Every character's drama is alive in our society. If you are not one of the characters, you know one of them. The way the end was written and performed is absolutely stunning.
When Wellington breaks his 4 years of sobriety is exactly the time when some of his old parts die, giving space for other Wellingtons to emerge. He was the character that I expected less growth from, but his evolution was beautiful to watch. Tercia's panic attacks and the invisibility of her pain inside her own family reminded me of my own mother's panic problems. Eunice's cravings as a young feminist student, as much as a black queer woman, made me feel closer to her than I felt about the others. And Deivinho's soundless dreams of being a scientist instead of a football player surely made dreaming a little more possible to other kids that may have watched the picture.
Undoubtedly, a GREAT movie from the Brazilian vault that you must watch ASAP.
