A very good portrait, both psychological and social, of the society issues in the Italian post-war period. The setting and background are well recreated and narrated. I cannot give a full evaluation as I have never read the original novel, and therefore it is impossible for me to estimate how much this film departed from the novel.

The sailor who dreams of being a writer. The Jack London novel is takes place in Naples, in an Italy that begins to understand the power of the "popolo". A socialist who is not a socialist. The adaptation is attractive, although the development of the main character is incomplete. We have the feeling that we don't understand him. Footage inserts try to complete the story, but end up being inconvenient.

_Martin Eden_ is a 2-hour biopic about a fictional character (created by Jack London a hundred years ago).

Biographies are of little enough interest as it is, but add to that the fact that this man never existed and you find yourself questioning the film's validity... until you realize the film wasn't made in the 50s, despite its look and feel, and that the director Pietro Marcello has painted a remarkable historical fresco. Don't see _Martin Eden_ for the story, but don't miss this wonderful cinematic experience for its wealth of style.
