This movie is kinda old school in that it is heavily dialogue driven. So I guess that's why a lot of modern audiences don't like this. Surely don't expect a Frankenstein movie. I found it to be mostly interesting, especially the last half of the film. Elle Fanning is tremendous as usual.

Fascinating account of the Frankenstein author. Slow paced but never uninteresting. It sheds light on the face behind the monster, while telling its own tale of a woman confined by the sexist monsters of the period she lived in.

If you don’t know Mary Shelley’s true story this movie is a great way to start knowing the person behind the writer.
As all biopics it lefts a lot of stuff out and changes a bit of the biography so it can be more cinematic. If it wasn’t for the young actors you might think this movie is from the early 2000 but even though the movie lacks a bit of action and is mainly focused on the dialogues the best parts of it are left unsaid, just veiled enough so the viewer can imagine them, but without saying them out loud, that though doesn’t work as well because it’s a biopic so a trip to Wikipedia after will solve pretty much every doubt, but despite its flaws Elle Fanning’s performance makes it worth watching.

Soulless, mind-numbingly boring and cliche. How anyone manages to make such a boring movie about such a fascinating historical character is beyond me.

I really wanted to hate it!

Watching Mary Shelley was a curious experience. I knew I should hate it, because, although it gets many of the facts right, it gets a massive amount wrong, and thematically, it's a mess. As an English academic by trade, it really should have irritated me no end. Additionally, pretty much everyone I know who has seen it (both academics and non) have loathed it. And I found it very difficult to disagree with any of the criticisms they had. The film is, in places, laughably bad. But for all that, whilst I most certainly didn't love it, nor did I hate it. In fact, I actually liked quite a bit of it. I'm ashamed!

The monsters behind the books. As the story progressed, I remember thinking to myself, "This is the biography of the book, Frankenstein" It is only a slice of Mary Shelley's life but a treatise on her creation. The acting is good. It is a talented young cast. Elle Fanning shines in this piece. As commentators have remarked, it is rather wordy, but I feel the intentions of the writers were to let the poet and author be revealed by their own words, as much as possible. Unfortunately, this pulled the pace down and cast the whole under a heavy, rather than lyrical, curtain. I give this film a 7 (good) out of 10. [Biographical Drama]

Interesting movie. I haven’t ever been a horror enthusiast but found the bio of the author intriguing. After the movie I felt compelled to do more research so that says something about the movie.

Elle Fanning leads the cast in the indie biopic Mary Shelley. After falling in love with a young poet Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin runs off with her sister to live with him but things take a turn when his father cuts him off and they find themselves living in poverty and avoiding debt collectors, then one fateful night she has a dream that inspires her to write a chilling horror story that would become one of the most famous ever written. Fanning delivers a strong performance and the rest of the cast is pretty good as well. And the sets and costumes are incredibly well-done. However, there seems to be a bit of a political agenda, pushing acceptance of polyamory and the bohemian lifestyle. Also, the film doesn’t really go much into the creation and legacy of the Frankenstein novel; just a few scenes of Mary writing it and struggling to get it published. Yet while it has some issues, overall Mary Shelley is an intriguing look at the woman behind one of the most frightening novels ever written.
