John Carpenter is one of my favorite directors. Chevy Chase is one of my favorite comedians. So this movie should be a winner for me, but it's not.

The movie looks good because looking good is a Carpenter trademark. The special effects are fun but I can't see how they were any more effective than the original Universal Horror "The Invisible Man" from back in the 1930s. Sam Neill is really good as a ruthless villain.

The problem for me is with the two leads. Chase and Daryl Hannah are so flat. It looks like Chase is uninterested and his character is an unlikable jerk. Normally, he plays those characters to perfection ("Fletch", for example). But not here. Daryl Hannah is just not good. I've never liked her in anything south of the mermaid in "Splash".

This was an elusive entry in my half-hearted quest to see all of Carpenter's films. I'm glad I got to see it but it was really underwhelming.

Underrated John Carpenter flick. While the story may be a bit lacking and end abruptly, it's still fun, and has some awesome effects. Effects that were extremely impressive when the movie came out.

From John Carpenter comes the satiric spy thriller _Memoirs of an Invisible Man_. When a lab accident turns Nick Halloway invisible, the CIA attempts to capture him in order to learn the secret of his invisibility and force him to work for them. Starring Chevy Chase, Daryl Hannah, Sam Neill, and Michael McKean, the film as a pretty good cast; Chase especially does an impressive job with the dry, sardonic humor. But the film doesn’t just do invisibility gags, it also shows the depression, isolation, and restrictiveness that would come with being truly unseen. And the invisibility effects are remarkably well-done. However, the CIA characters are one-dimensional stereotypes and the chases get a little repetitive. Yet while it has its problems, _Memoirs of an Invisible Man_ is entertaining and a bit of fun.

I'm a bit miffed that Memoirs of an Invisible Man never get the love it deserves. It might not be typical Carpenter, but it's still a pretty good movie. I think most people expect it to be more like Carpenters other outings, and in their confusion, forget to actually pay attention when they are watching it.

I like Memoirs of an Invisible Man, and I got a worn VHS tape to prove it. Approach it with an open mind, and I bet you'll like it as well.

It's a fun thriller with a simple story and few inconsistencies. Still enjoyable, but don't expect too much.

Memoirs of the Invisible Man is fun. Even if it didn’t know if it was a Comedy or a Thriller.

While I appreciate the effort to make a movie based on the book.. this is just a laughably bad adaptation that's only barely based on the novel.

Its Carpenter, so it's still extremely entertaining, and those effects! For the time, perfect! but oh man, this could have been so much better.

This was pretty damn good! Huge Carpenter fan but put this off for awhile. Then the Scream Factory release came out and I said why the hell not. The special effects hold up pretty well because it's pretty minimal. I mean the full on CG stuff like the half face part, yeah that looks 1992, but overall its a lot better than I thought it would be. If it wasn't for the amount of unnecessary voice over and an unfortunate choice of "cab driver cover" at the end, this would be a pretty a pretty untouchable movie. I get why it didn't set the world on fire but it did every single thing I would want to see out of a movie about an invisible man. Sam Neill as a bad guy, a perfect set up for some physical comedy and super babe Daryl Hannah. Really dug it!

A fun movie, with some great effects, groundbreaking at the time, but a rather pedestrian script keeps it from being great.
