It was really good. Almost perfect, everything about it was great. I give it 9/10. All the actors were incredibly transparent, there was a good amount of humor through the movie to lighten the load of the more depressing parts, and you were able to connect with the characters pretty well with little back story.

Spoiler
The scene where the killer pops up behind the woman in the bushes in the back of the shot was one of the most horrifying scenes in any movie I have ever seen. It made my skin crawl. The shot was done in a way where it wasn't obvious to the audience at all, just a small figure in the grass that made the imagination run wild.

@cgresock totally agree with the killer scene when he jumps out. It chilled my spine and is so typical of Korean crime movies. Outstanding stuff.

Beautiful scenery, great music and good acting. I have seen it twice now and it was just as good as I remembered it. Some really funny moments and a few thrills and chilling moments. But the way the movie is crafted and cut is just beautiful. Love the ending immensely, and since it's based on a true story - you can't really complain about it.

Authoritarianism + anti-intellectualism. Name a more iconic duo.

This is a political satire at heart, disguised as a crime thriller. It's Bong Joon-ho's way of shining a light on the rampant police brutality and socioeconomic inequality under the several dictatorships that the people of South Korea had to endure from 1961-1988.

I'm deducting a couple of points because the third act was a bit messy, even though
detective Seo's character development was pivotal in showing how toxic corruption is
.

Have to say, I was underwhelmed. maybe it's because I watch so many crime shows and movies, and this was made years ago. I know this dude is a legendary director, but this movie didn't hit the spot for me. Was expecting something more dark I guess. Watching shows like The Killing and True Detective, just to name a couple, have made me be spoiled by crime stories. if I had seen it when it came out, I'm sure it probably would have blown my mind. nothing to do with it being a foreign film either, because I believe a lot of foreign movies are better than the American remakes.

@phantomlimb79 Because it's a political satire disguised as a crime thriller. South Korea was under several consecutive dictatorships from 1961 until 1988. That's why the film depicts the student protests of 87, the rampant police brutality etc.

Of course you don't find out who the murderer was. But let me make one thing clear:
The real hwaseong killer was found over 30 years later. Over 15 years after this film. The real murderer also lived in the next village, came to work in a factory and to kill by bus and the actor looks very similar to the original.
This film has it all. His gripping moments and a bit of stupid humor. Well played and exciting. This film manages to show the work and the mistakes of the police. Big compliment !

Odd combination of suspense thriller and dark comedy. I'm really into crime thrillers (yes I love Zodiac although I think Memories of Murder is a complete different ballgame, it's just the story that's comparable), this movie seems more about the character development of both detectives and the shift they seem to make in their approach to the case. The music is pretty good, the atmosphere is well captured but I do think the director didn't quite get the period where the South Korean society went through, just as the public disgrace with the police during the investigations. The last part was quite impressive but doesn't make this a all time classic. Recommended.

I'm not sure what the fuss was about.

I really tried to like this movie but I must be coming at it from the wrong angle.

I saw Parasite recently, which I loved, so I'm going through the director's previous work.

This movie, just left me cold and frustrated.

I'll try The Host next to see if I like that.

Bizarre, most unlike me...

@plittlefield same for me. I went in ready for a masterpiece. I was annoyed by the stupid decision making, ineptitude, negative development of characters. Everyone in this movie sucks. Left me cold and frustrated too.

One of the best crime thrillers you will watch. It's dark and chilling and disturbing, you won't know where to turn as you see these detectives absolutely butchering their job while more and more victims pile up. Bong Joon-ho is a fantastic director, all his films have so much character and this specific type of dark humour that both makes you uncomfortable and breaks the tension at the same time. His ability to build suspense and shock you without being vulgar is refreshing.

Not to be watched for the plot, as it’s one of those movies that take the tropes of a specific genre and filter them through a particular social context. Makes me think of what films like “The Big Lebowski” or “Inherent Vice” did with noir; it’s all about the setting and the characters rather than the events. This time we have a typical crime movie staged in the rural areas of South Korea during the late 80s. The serial killer is always ahead of the incompetent detectives, who clearly represent the chauvinistic Korean society of those years. The result is both hilarious and grotesque, neither a parody nor social critique.
