A fairly atmospheric creature feature with acting ranging from good to adequate to "oh no, your papers" HBOMax has both the theatrical and director's Cut of the film

A film where the concept and ideas are interesting, but the execution Is somewhat hampered by largely uninteresting characters and a rather generic plot, even with the Director’s Cut that now exists. There are flashes of a good film here and Del Toro manages to stage some fun moments once the action moves underground. But this feels like a film trying to unsuccessfully fuse an interesting new filmmaker’s sensibilities with a very generic US studio thriller. Thankfully, Del Toro went on to much better things.

Guillermo del Toro’s horror feature Mimic is a bizarre creature film. After the CDC genetically engineers an insect to fight off a plague spread by cockroaches, they mutate into human sized predators and build a colony in New York City’s underground sewer and tunnel system. Staring Mira Sorvino, Josh Brolin, and Charles S. Dutton, the cast is fairly strong; however, the performances are rather bland. And the writing is particularly poor, as the characters aren’t very interesting and the plot is formulaic. Still, del Toro’s directing is able to bring some intensity and creepiness to the material. Mimic is able to deliver some chills and a few scares, but ultimately it’s a stereotypical horror film.

A decent horror movie that has not aged the best. Some of the insects are truly disgusting and some look like bad CGI.

I don't know how I never watched this when I was younger but I am glad I went in blind. You can see the beginning of Guillhermo del Toro's style in this, and this story fits well in the 90's.
