Nothing to say really besides: that’s how you do it!

This has without a doubt the most impressive stunts of the franchise, and it really knows how to use its characters and challenge them. There’s a lot of propulsive energy, lush cinematography and great editing. Lorne Balfe does a great Hans Zimmer impression, and Chris McQuarrie does a great Chris Nolan impression. Alright maybe I’m oversimplifying there, because I have to commend McQuarrie for doing another stylistic reinvention of the franchise, the cinematography and general feel aren’t just that of _Rogue Nation 2.0_. I’m not even sure if the constant evolution of this franchise comes from a place of creative ambition or commercial opportunity, but at least it keeps the films fresh. Some of its core elements will always remain the same, however. For example, the plot’s once again just a vehicle for all the juicy stuff. You could call it out for being generic or basic, but they find so much creativity and fun in these tropes that it becomes very entertaining (intrigue, the mask sequences, the craziness and constantly rising intensity). Sure, there’s a very predictable twist at the end of the second act, but more often than not, it managed to surprise me. Henry Cavill is a great new addition, bringing back Rebecca Ferguson was the best choice they could’ve made, and Pegg & Rhames remain the reliable anchors that add some heart & humour. It’s all exceptional stuff, it could very well go down as the best action franchise in history if the next films stick the landing.

@jordyep No, the first one is how you fucking do it. The rest of the series is still trying to catch up.

@misnomer oh I like the first one, but it’s been outdone by the last 3 (I’d even argue the last 4). It’s not as memorable as the recent ones, and some set pieces don’t hold up.

@jordyep I beg to differ. The first is still the only one that managed to capture the feeling of the show, it's the only one with brains, with a lot of thought put into it (which was what _Mission: Impossible_ has always been about), whereas all the following ones (specially M:I2) are mostly brawn. _Fallout_ in particular was all about long chases and fights. It's just another action movie. But it's understandable how that may sound more appealing to a younger generation.

@misnomer Speaking as someone from a younger generation, I can tell you that my favourite movies have quite a bit of plot in them, but I think that's besides the point that you're trying to make. Yes, the latest MI movies have been lighter on plot, but that's fine, simply because McQuarrie and Bird understand what to give the audience in order to keep them interested (set pieces that are extremely well done, character dynamics & fun). Just look at one of the other best action movies of recent years, Mad Max: Fury Road. That one also has a minimized plot, but it's filled with set pieces, interesting characters and socio-political commentary. Just because an action film has more plot in it, that doesn't automatically make it better. In fact, I'd argue that that's where the first one falters, simply because its storytelling is too convoluted, which is a result of them shooting without a finished script. It might be closer to the original show that way (which I, in all fairness, haven't seen), but who's to say that a film cannot improve on its source material? I mean, do I have to bring up The Shining, or more recently, Ready Player One?

@jordyep from your initial comment, I was trying to see if you were just another guy into action movies, and I'm pleased to know you're not. You make good points, but I can't think of a single movie in the series that has improved on the first one. Maybe, in the end, it's all a matter of taste. I left the movie theatre completely ecstatic after having watched the first one (I loved the story and all the plot twists, to me everything was very well done and perfectly delivered to the audience). I've seen all the other ones (including _Fallout_, yesterday) and I've never left the theatre feeling the same way, there's always this feeling that there's something missing. _Fury Road_ is an unfair comparison, though, that movie was absolutely bonkers and it did feel just like the other ones in the series (_Fury Road_ was one of my favourite movies, that year).
All in all, it's nice to have different opinions so that there can be healthy discussion about it. It was a great movie and a highlight in the series for you (and most people around here, it seems), it was just another action movie for me (but good one at that, hence my 7).

Aka: Tom cruise running part 18

Be ready to be Shocked! When the twist that is already obvious comes up.

Hold onto your brain for the segments where our heroes get trapped - only for them to say 'haha, we knew you would trap us, we set up a thing to make this happen'

Feel no tension as 1 of the 4 of the main cast takes it in turn to definitely have a bullet put in their head, by a really mean person, but is then saved by someone who wasn't there a minute ago, hiding behind a wall with a perfect shot, they didn't bother to take earlier.

Gasp! As a quite good stunt is then made 4 times longer & pathetic, because, probably, TC wasn't thrilled enough.

Then watch in Awe at TC doing his own stunt driving, speeding around Paris in car & bike chases! In Paris, that's Paris! Where traffic sits for days. But nevermind that, because - its all real TC doing them scenes, for real, except most of the other traffic is so obviously cgi, this may as well be 'ready player one'

mission impossible : fallout of the cinema seat due to too much moving around coz you'd like to go to sleep a bit.
& finally, spend a lot of Henry Cavill's screentime wondering, 'did that mustache really have to be untouched, surely that could have been painted on, I bet it was TC that forced that hurt onto 'Justice league'

The atmos sound was good in the helicopter crash.

@pigfaced I was hoping for 'the twist' to actually be a red herring.
The scene with the phone was a dead giveaway for a very predictable plot-twist, like you said.
I'm wondering why the director chose to show his hand in such an obvious way. Did he underestimate the audience's intelligence or are we too smart for this kind of movies now?
I definitely go for the first one,

@pigfaced @serggyo it's not a twist if they are giving it away. You guys are pointing fingers at others for what wasn't a twist...since like you're saying the phone in the first 20 min of the film tells you what's happening. You guys are acting like you're so good for knowing about a "twist".

Suffers from the same issues the Bourne movies do.
If a movie series goes on for too long and has a somewhat more complex story than for example the Harry Potter series, it gets too convoluted over time. Too much baggage basically. I don't care anymore who works for whom.
Who's a double-/tripple-/quadruple-agent? I just don't care. It's lame that you can anticipate that whoever is new to the series will be one. Ethan Hunt knows yet again about the most absurd setup to trick him and how to get out without explaining it to the audience? Yawwwn.
The villain isn't killing our heroes when given the chance because... to enable the resolution at the end? Why kill someone by snapping the neck, or putting a bullet in the head if you can hang him instead, right? Because it's more suspenseful? No, no it is not. It's just extending the screentime unnecessarily. It's lame story telling.
Why is Benji slowly hanged while the "pretty woman" is just tight up? Weren't they all going to die anyway according to our mastermind Lane? What was that about? That whole setup was ridiculous.

There's a lot of action, yes, but no suspense whatsoever. We all know how this movie will end - more or less.
It's a typical shut-your-brain-off action movie you watch in the cinema and will forget most of it when leaving already.
The whole movie follows a too simple formula with an action driven resolve at the end to give the audience a good feeling, deluding from all the issues that is has. Simply a forgettable movie all around.
Although not the weakest of this series but not the best either.

Some things age like fine wine and in the cinematic world the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise is a great example of the adage. Perhaps it has to do with the 56-year-old Tom Cruise who defies age and pushes his physical boundaries for our viewing pleasure? The answer is quite evident in ‘Fallout’ as his Ethan Hunt is as good as a caped superhero in the sixth film of the series. The story isn't all that new with its twists and turns. But ‘Fallout’ manages to build on the previous films in the series by bringing back old friends and foes, besides adding some new ones. Henry Cavill as August Walker fits right into this universe as the hammer to the scalpel that is Ethan Hunt. His presence is looming enough to fill the entire screen whenever he appears. Simon Pegg takes on the status of a series regular alongside Ving Rhames, whose Benji and Luther respectively play more than just mere sidekicks as they add comic levity and heart. Alec Baldwin and Angela Bassett also make a mark in their brief appearances but watch out for impactful turns by Rebecca Ferguson and Michelle Monaghan along the way.

Writer & Director Christopher McQuarrie allows each character to shine while building on their history with each other, thus making them endearing to the audience. This only serves to up the ante when they’re in danger. McQuarrie also lets the story breathe by bringing some calm before the storm hits. Which leads to the most crucial aspect of the series, and one that McQuarrie clearly excels at in this film – the action sequences. Not only are they meticulously planned; they are executed with precision, even when the fist fights are gritty and gruesome. Rob Hardy beautifully choreographs the camerawork following these intricate set-pieces, either allowing you to take in the expanse or bringing you up close and personal when required. This is paired with a soundtrack by Lorne Balfe that lends to the tension by giving the iconic ‘Mission Impossible’ theme a sinister sense of urgency.

McQuarrie has now directed two ‘Mission: Impossible’ films; his understanding of the franchise and its characters proves to be the secret weapon of the series. The fact that the stunts are largely done with practical effects featuring the cast, and most prominently Cruise himself, sets a whole new standard for action films. ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ is a great mix of plot, pacing and performances that is undeniably the best entry in the franchise, while it re-establishes Cruise’s status as an action superstar.

Mission Impossible - Fallout is a continuation of Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation. It is directed by Christopher McQuarrie who also directed Rogue Nation and also has the return of the psycho villain Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) who the bad guys want to set free.

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is after the mysterious John Lark and a terrorist group called the Apostles who have stolen three plutonium grade devices and plan to set them off.

Hunt has to reluctantly accept a new team member. CIA operative August Walker (Henry Cavill) because the IMF team were responsible for losing the plutonium in Berlin.

As a spy thriller there is enough tension, thrills and a serpentine story with several twists.

However the film is overlong and I felt that some of the action scenes consisted of myriad chase scenes that were stylishly done but nothing really memorable liked the Burj Khalifa climbing scene.
