This movie is simply stunning. Props to Xavier Dolan, so talented and brilliant young filmmaker. I've seen all of his movies but this one is my favorite! Everything is connected so beautifully, songs fit perfectly to the scenes and make them more alive. The main thing about this movie is the fact that it feels so real, it doesn't let you think otherwise. I'm amazed!

"Life is like a game of bowling, if you don't have balls, it's tough."

Amazing. This had me siting at the edge of my seat multiple times. I can't remember the last movie to cause me this much anxiety. The aspect ratio takes a few minutes to get use to but I found it works. The characters take up so much of the frame that it feels more personable. The soundtrack is good. I loved the wonderwall scene and the dream sequence is heartbreaking.

The 1:1 Format as a stylistic method is simply annoying. The film exaggerates at times but for the most part i liked it

It's not annoying, it just sets the mood and gets you in the feeling of what is happening. When it opens... You feel the freedom, and that's the important thing. I find it so brilliant. Signed: giro<br />

@giro yes, I felt like it framed everything much better than normal aspect ratio

Because the story itself is very weak, the movie relies on its characters to hook the audience. And it succeeds. Three very unstable main characters make this movie a rollercoaster. The soundtrack is amazing too.

One of my favourite parts of the film is when Diane was having that dream sequence (I guess it was) about Steve growing up. The music on it made it much more real.

Even though the 1:1 format is something that nobody would expect anymore nowadays, since it's been misused and overused way too often now, Xavier Dolan knew how to use this kind of effect carefully and not in an annoying way.

Aside from the format, Mommy was just an incredible, carefully and beautifully made movie.
There was not a single scene that felt overly scripted or 'unreal'- both acting and writing were on point throughout the entire 140 minutes.
Also, it was interesting to finally see a movie portraying the challenges that come with raising a both traumatised and psychologically unusual child in such a fashion. There was no intention to be (unnecessarily) provocative or to create some sort of fake awareness. It simply was a great story between a mother and her son that could've easily been based on real events (aside from the fact that all of this happened in a 'fake Canada' with 'fake laws', as explained right at the beginning of the movie).
Kudos to Xavier Dolan for making this great film, as well as the awesome use of music, and to the three main actors for their diverse and superb job!

I'm not one to cry when watching movies, but this one made me ugly cry and then laugh and then cry again.
This film isn't really about telling a story, it's about people, relationships, raw feelings, and it conveys these things unlike any other I've seen. The music is perfect, the cinematography is perfect, the actors transcend their characters and all of this coalesces into something truly unique and heartfelt.
I recommend this to absolutely everyone, but be prepared, the experience is heart-wrenching, physical and unforgettable.
