This movie is great and I loved every minute of it. This is a film made by Xavier Dolan. With this film, I can very clearly see that this young and talented director is developing a unique directing style through the use of aspect ratio. I mention this because this movie has quite the unique aspect ratio and some people might not watch this movie because of it, but I sincerely urge you, if you like movies in general, you have to give this movie a chance because this is one of the best films to come out in 2014. The unique aspect ratio is a perfect square and not only is it of artistic significance to the story, but it also provides depth to one of the characters in the movie. Now, the aspect ratio does not add or detract from the movie, when I say it's a great movie, I mean it's a great movie regardless of the aspect ratio change or not. The 3 main actors were simply superb in their roles and it was some of the best acting I've seen all year. If you could not tell already, I was pretty blown away by this movie. Every single actor in this movie was superb, even ones we only see for a couple of seconds. The camera work was not only superb but was very fitting for the unique aspect ratio. There was very careful consideration on what was included inside each shot. Dolan completely reinvented the rules of shot composition to be specific towards his own film and it works. The music was surprisingly fitting, even though it mainly consisted of main stream songs. Not only did the music in the scene start and end when it fitted the scene but the lyrics fitted the emotions present in the scene. Not only do these 3 characters have one of the most unique on screen relationships, but the characters are extremely unique and entertaining. Sadly, this movie is not flawless. There is a joke made about a characters appearance is made fun of, using the insult as a punch line to end the scene. But the shot ends on the person making the insult and not on the victim. It would have been much more effective if the scene ended on the man the really let the audience understand the joke. Also, there was a title sequence that illustrated the rules of the movies universe, and I feel that it could been illustrated more effectively. Overall, a great movie and I see a promising career for Xavier Dolan!
