My enjoyment of the film parallels the descending parable in the life of its characters. The opening was enough to steal my heart, with an overwhelming quantity of hallucinatory details introducing us to a whimsical world filled with wacky inventions and wildly colorful surreal elements, with a “crafty” touch similar to a dollhouse. It's a place with fabric food moving in stop-motion, anthropomorphic mice serving as house helpers, and spaceship crucifixes floating in the air. This world mirrors the characters' emotional states, morphing in shape and color alongside them. Unfortunately, empathizing becomes quite challenging, especially when things take a turn for the worse. I haven't read the source material, but everything feels superficial and for its own sake, somewhat put together without a real purpose or a message to convey. The film portrays how illness and addictions drain the lives of those around you, but then what?
It's a real shame because the start is flawless.

I'm big fan of Michael Gondry's works, but I couldn't take this one. I tried one hour until I couldn't finnish it. There was no visible conflict, too messy and non-sense, the effects only distracted me.
