A boy's best friend is his mother.

An absolute master work from director Bong Joon-ho, who manages to shock me with its ending reveal, even though it shouldn't, as it was obvious from a distance but the impact still surprised me.

Didn’t work for me at all. There’s a core here that works–mother drawn to extreme lengths to protect the son accused of a crime. But the first 45 minutes dragged without me building a connection to any of the characters, so then I didn’t feel invested in much that came after. There were some strange editing choices and some odd plot elements and….I could go on. It just wasn’t my movie.

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Mother’:

1. Wow. They got me. I didn’t see that entire conclusion coming from a mile away — and I totally feel like I should have. That’s the sign of a good film.

2. I’m really enjoying Bong Joon-ho as a storyteller. After seeing three of his films, I’m getting a better sense of his style and the quirky moments. I look forward to what he does next.

3. The ending - with the kid they found guilty for the crime - was heart-wrenching.

Mother develops very organically, much better than most whodunnit mysteries, and also boasts an incredible performance by its leads. It also takes its time to contemplate the reality of this seemingly unreal crime, leaving one wrecked to have found the truth.

What a great movie. The ending was unpredictable and the question of morals and rationality while finding truth for your loved ones is exemplary in K-revenge genre.

Damn Bong sure loves the idea of people getting killed with rocks to the head.

Forreal though, this was so disconcerting - it felt twisted from the first shot, I had this creepy feeling it could always get worse so I didn't relax for a moment of the entire movie. Bong is _so_ good at creating this type of feeling, both through the meticulous pacing and structure of his storytelling (gradual reveals, sick plot twists and the feeling that there's something around the corner) and through the way he chooses to capture everything. The soundtrack was very chilling in this film too.
