Drama, History, War
A biopic of Napoleon Bonaparte, tracing the Corsican's career from his schooldays (where a snowball fight is staged like a military campaign) to his flight from Corsica, through the French Revolution (where a real storm is intercut with a political storm) and the Terror, culminating in his triumphant invasion of Italy in 1797. Originally intended to be the first of six films, director Abel Gance realized the full project would be nigh impossible, and never raised the money to complete the other five. The film's legendary reputation is due to the astonishing range of techniques that Gance uses to tell his story, culminating in the final twenty-minute triptych sequence, which alternates widescreen panoramas with complex multiple- image montages projected simultaneously on three screens.

[MUBI] The last great epic of silent movies. Inventing cinema as art. The portrait of a truly idealized Napoleon, turned into the hero of a heroic film. The extension of "The birth of a nation" (D.W. griffith, 1915) as epic cinema. But also effective in moments of full emotion (the reunion with the mother, the singing of "La Marseillaise"). That great, amazing Act IV. The cinema that we will never watch again.

A movie to be appreciated, not enjoyed. Gance continues to impress me as a filmmaker, using a wide variety of pretty shocking techniques (handheld-esque camera movement, widescreen??) to enhance emotional impact or to develop themes (lots of superimposition, etc.) I'm particularly in love with his editing style, which can recall the best of Eisenstein when it's done well. But unfortunately, his editing prowess doesn't extend to cutting down the length of this films, as this one is over 5 hours AGAIN. And unlike La Roue, the story and characters just aren't compelling to me in the slightest, so it felt like a slog to get through.

Where to start? Carl Davis' recently composed inspiring score provides a wonderful accompaniment to the truly epic silent retrospective on the life of Napoleon. I saw a digital restoration recently and the quality of this over 90 year old film (in 2 parts) has lost none of its vivacity and vigour. W More
