Documentary
On August 9, 2016, a young Cree man named Colten Boushie died from a gunshot to the back of his head after entering Gerald Stanley's rural property with his friends. The jury's subsequent acquittal of Stanley captured international attention, raising questions about racism embedded within Canada's legal system and propelling Colten's family to national and international stages in their pursuit of justice. Sensitively directed by Tasha Hubbard, "nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up" weaves a profound narrative encompassing the filmmaker's own adoption, the stark history of colonialism on the Prairies, and a vision of a future where Indigenous children can live safely on their homelands.

I think it is important to listen to people’s perspectives especially when there is a fog of cultural divide between us. I am a white Canadian of European descent, hence I’m seen as a descendant of colonizers, and I followed this event through our national broadcaster. This documentary sees this event as a family member who is also from the same First Nation as Colten. I heard a deeper understanding of what happened that night and begin to understand how historical biases and fear clouded the event, and the desire to protect property and the availability of lethal force brought tragedy. In the end I agree with the 8 year old Cree boy, the loss of an ATV is not worth the loss of a person‘s life. In the end, one life was lost and others were destroyed. No justice can change that. We need to listen. We need to seek understanding. We need to enlarge our perspective. I give this documentary an 8 (important) out of 10. [Documentary]
