I've finally found a movie that's even preachier than "Silent Running". There is nothing subtle about this 1970 disaster flick. If you want to watch a movie that offers seething hatred for humans, this is the one for you. There is nothing...NOTHING, redeeming about anyone in this film. It's not only exceeding dark and depressing, it's as heavy-handed as a lead pipe.

I could forgive it's hopeless, bleak take on EVERYTHING if it were even close to being a good film, or if it reveled in its B-movie trappings. But it doesn't and that makes it nothing more than a sermon about the evils of mankind.

Reminded me of Panic In Year Zero, but not as good. The dialogue was sometimes funny because it was silly or deadpan. Like when a radio announcer calmy says there has been 'an outbreak of cannibalism', as if he's a weather man describing drizzle. The soundtrack desperately tries to makes us feel something at the start. It's accompanied by strong imagery like a starving African child. That seemed a very cheap trick to make but it did make me eager to see what other bizarre things I'd see. The editing was pretty awful, but it make me laugh.
I appreciate the fast pace in the first half but visually it looked like channel skipping - very jarring. Can't say I cared for the characters but they were OK. Who doesn't mind watching an ex military architect wearing an eye patch? Like the African child there is a particularly random trashy scene with some bikers. Half way into the movie and it gets hard to watch. Boring.. Bad direction. No tension. No atmosphere.
Bit of a wasted opportunity overall. It all with red and says 'this picture is not a documentary, but it could be.' I disagree.
