Campy fun, weird characters, a killer soundtrack, wild tonal shifts and really solid performances. This is truly a one of a kind emotional trip. Structurally it’s very similar to _Magnolia_; there’s not really an overarching plot but the characters are all linked by a theme, in this case that being sexual discovery. Aesthetically it feels very ahead of the curve, the colours and editing choices feel trippy and overstimulating, but not in a way that’s exhausting. It’s very of its time but not in a way that feels dated, unlike some other 90s teen comedies. Its only problem is that it tries to juggle too much, the fact that it works as well as it does is already quite the achievement, however not all of the characters are equally as interesting.

watched at alamo with gregg and james doing a q&a before. ended up hanging with james for an hour next day next to roxie

Nowhere is very difficult to describe: there is not much of a standard plot, the movie is driven by the many atypical characters, and quotable dialog. If there is a story to be had, it takes place within a 24-hour period, and centers around our main character, Dark, and his friends, who are going to a party that night. On paper, this could come across as boring, and this movie is absolutely not for everyone. What fleshes out the runtime is the soundtrack, and all the random events throughout, including, but not limited to: drugs, violence, sex, alien abduction, suicide, and rape. So what is Nowhere? It's a dark, indie comedy, which plays out like if David Cronenberg directed Pulp Fiction... an art film for people who hate art films. "Bend over, robot!"
