The first of half of this movie kinda felt like a live action Studi Ghibli movie and then shit gets real.

@hwlr Seriously. This movie answers the question that no one asked: What if a corporation wanted to slaughter Totoro?

Beautifully told story that comes close to brilliance, but the occasionally wacky character and moment undermines the film as a whole. Still, a film well worth seeing, but if you shed a tear at Marley and Me, this is going to break you into a million pieces.

I was more touched as a pet owner than a meat eater, so moral of the story? Don't kill other people's pets.

Okja is a very quirky and original story and it easily Netflix's best original film so far. Its got heart but also has a pretty strong message. You fall in love the titular "super pig" and the wild performances of Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal are so weird that they are irrespirable.

One of the first truly great Netflix Original Movies, along with _Beasts of No Nation_.

After the success of _Snowpiercer_, Bong Joon-ho provides another original, timely and thought-provoking movie, with themes that deeply resonate in today's society.

Beautiful and painful film. It shows how animals are treated by humans, or for their use or as just a piece of meat. I would like to see all the free animals at the end of the movie, but understand that despite them being a movie they wanted to portray the reality of the business world. Sad, but necessary. Congratulations Netflix, note ten.

I really enjoyed the first part of this movie. Sadly it quickly begins turning into a heavily agenda filled movie forcing a narrative down your throat about GMO/Slaughterhouse/Animal cruelty, to such an extent I am surprised this wasn't made by PETA. What's more I was disgusted at how they show Okja being very intelligent and showing almost human level critical thinking/empathy, then they put her through over the top cruelty to get their message across. It felt unnecessarily harsh and just pulled me out of the experience. This movie quickly went from a strong 7 to a middle of the road 5.

@wallflowers it's portraying the real world and you're mad at that? I thought it was one of the best movies I've seen because it was so real!

@lsand3 Sorry I somehow missed this. I don't agree it's portraying the "real world" but rather an vast exaggeration to pull on certain strings to the point its too blatant with it's message.

@unconcerned thank you! I was searching (and hoping) for a comment like this. My thoughts exactly - started out as a good experience, then quickly became an overexaggerated disappointment, a forced propaganda. And this is coming from a huge animal lover, so...

@sopherian I mean you're free to hold that opinion. I do believe animal treatment could be improved in the slaughter industry, but generalizations and mass judgement is pointless. The main point I was making in my post is that the movie had conflicting tones and the sentiments they were trying to portray were ham fisted and detrimental to the message as a whole. If you're okay with the tone shift and the message they are vehemently pushing then I am sure you enjoyed the movie more than I could and that's completely fine.

@unconcerned there is no humane slaughter. You can be perfectly healthy without meat. Vegans are even living up to 10 years longer! That makes eating animals a choice. And killing just for taste is heartless and cruel. For me personally it's always hard to watch these things. But it's necessary and an important message to be spread.

@sopherian Well there are ways to raise animals in which they are not tortured, feel pain, or treated like inventory. I think that's the most you can ask of people in our culture realistically. Not going to get into any health studies but I am all for people spreading the vegan lifestyle if done politely. Maybe sooner than later we will get ethically sourced cheaper lab grown meat that can cut the practice of slaughter to an almost inexistent amount.

To your other question yes I do, I eat meat two to three times a week. I cut back a few years ago for environmental reasons rather than for moral (cruelty) reasons. I also source my meat locally and know how the animals are treated, even do some hunting. I think there is always room for compromise rather than the idea of reforming a cultural and historic practice. Though I agree a film preaching about cruel practices is great, I just feel it could have been more balanced and not a jarring of a turn like in this movie.

@unconcerned I do agree this movie was over-the-top. That said, I think the message should read (whether or not it was intended to or not) as anti-corporate, which I wholly agree with. This 'there is no humane slaughter' crap is an eyeroll. Put me in a comfortable environment, treat me well, and kill me quickly and painlessly, and you can have my meat! That sounds like a wonderful life!

The problem with meat is the cruelty, which absolutely there in the industry, it's fucking awful and we should do something about it. But when the movie presented me with the idea of a environmentally sound source of meat that was going to live under good circumstances before being turned into food, I was totally down with that premise. The problem lies in the cruelty, the seedy underbelly, the corporate bullshit. That's the real villainy of this movie, and I wish that the movie had spoken to that, instead the oversimplification of 'meat bad'.

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Okja’:

1. Though it may have been lacking, or a bit nonsensical in parts, I give it points for originality — and for not shying away from some pretty dark stuff. And it undoubtedly tugged at the heartstrings.

2. I didn’t fully understand the whole twin sister thing. Was that supposed to symbolize something? If so, it was lost on me.

3. The young main actress was super badass. And we definitely saw quite a different side to Jake Gyllenhaal here.
