I enjoyed the low budget 70's aesthetic. Getting on now myself and found this bizarrely disturbing. Perhaps not for everyone, but I was entertained!

Like lego toilet paper, _Old_ is pretty clunky and rubbed me all the wrong ways.

From the point of view of someone who probably likes M. Night Shyamalan a tad more than most people, I find _Old_ to be one of his weakest efforts.

The predictable script (surprisingly so, for Shyamalan) relies too heavily on the graphic novel (I really, really hope having characters state their names and jobs outright wasn't a device he thought of himself), looks cheap and, tbh, is poorly directed. Shyamalan's stubborn refusal to show us any of the action (try too hard for a PG-13 much?) ends up being more annoying than intriguing.

This combined with some dubious acting in lead roles (**not** Thomasin McKenzie, Alex Wolff, Abby Lee Kershaw, or Rufus Sewell who all turn in strong performances) make _Old_ weak, fragile, and tired.

A beautiful idea but written like crap. The characters have useless and nonsensical dialogue, you can totally see that it's scripted and not dialogue that two normal people would tend to do in such a situation, for example, a child dies "Yoo we should talk about what's going on", or when in the cave there's Chrystal who doesn't want to be seen and there's Trent who keeps lighting the match, despite her throwing rocks at her. Okay Trent. Bad, weird acting from everyone except Thomasin. It's not explained why the island causes these effects, it's not explained why the hotel brings them there, or at least partially, because I understand that they are illegally testing drugs on people like the woman with the seizures, but what about the others? What exactly did they try to treat them? And finally the classic ending "..and they all lived happily ever after" after all that happened, without being the least bit traumatized by what happened. And how will their life go on now that they are 50 years old but not even a penny since until yesterday they were children?

Ok Shyamalan, you made a pretty shitty movie.

4/10

Did Tommy Wiseau accidentally write and direct this movie? The dialogue and acting is so unnatural and incoherent in its flow, it reminds me of that scene in 'The Room' where Johnny picks up a dozen red roses. Sometimes the camera angles are so bizarre that only a portion of someone's face will be on-screen as they deliver dialogue and will be constantly moving around. Was this intentional? Even 'The Room' wasn't this incompetent.

'Old' is one of the strangest, dumbest, unlikeable, and most terrible movies I've ever experienced, which is just baffling considering the expertise of someone like M. Night Shyamalan. I'd expect something like this from a filmmaking graduate's first big budget project with unknown actors. But everyone here has proven themselves competent in other films/television shows, so how did this happen and why did it happen this way?

I've almost always been a defender of M. Night Shyamalan, well, at least of his first four movies and "Split". But not this time. There's just no defending this disaster. Why is everyone in it so awkward? Is it trying to be funny?!? Because if it is, it's not. I've tried to find something to like about "Old" but it's awful.

So much potential but the script was just so poorly written. So bad in fact that it got to the point where I was laughing at how bad every single line was.

M. Night Shyamalan seems to love to bring wooden performances out of his cast. He even managed to get a robotic performance out of Will Smith in After Earth.
The way his characters interact with each other doesn’t always feel realistic either. It’s the most noticeable when there’s a number of characters together at once throwing around his stiff dialogue. Like, in The Lady in the Water for example.
Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) could have done something interesting and creepy with the story of a beach turning people old. With Shyamalan, the film trudges along and we never really connect or care about any of the characters.
The way Shyamalan pans away from violence or death isn’t a strength either. Hitchcock, he isn’t and it just comes off more amateurish than it makes him look skilled.

An interesting concept that doesn’t really go anywhere. M Night Shamalyan has an admirable devotion to his rules, but the audience is unlikely to be as enamored. He does his best work, surprisingly, with the child actors. Ever since the Sixth Sense he’s shown an understanding of children and their earnestness, their quirks, and their humanity. It’s especially shown during the parents’ fight when they drop awkward lines about being stuck in the future and stuck in the past, but the shot of the kids feels empathetic and real. It’s a shame then that this strength is one nullified by the film’s very conceit, because as the kids get older they lose that authenticity and the actors aren’t able to harness the uncanny accuracy required. There are some cool effects and moments, they just aren’t unified by a solid movie. Like Shamalyan’s insert recording them seems like a set up for meta commentary, but goes nowhere, and the theme of the sick being deemed ‘acceptable losses’ for the sake of the greater good is undercut by the demonization of some of these illness, especially with the two physical antagonists. Also the ‘romance’(?) was really weird, right?

Well, no
I'm not that guy that says "how long will accept Shyamalan movies because of 6th sense", well first of all 6th sense is not his best movie Unbreakable is. He is a genius, he has bad movies but no one can deny his special directing skills and unique story telling. Here we have indeed something beneath him. The story could be good but was poorly executed, rushed, and the twist and ending of course did not have your mind explode. Poor effort.

“Old” is an enjoyable summer thriller based on an interesting idea without fully committing to it. The beach could have been a symbolic plot device to deal with mankind’s most primal and inevitable fear, but the forced closure and far-fetched explanations to justify the plot ended up killing the magic. The cinematography and atmosphere are compelling, but the artificial dialogues and dated gimmicks send us back to the early 2000s. It just feels like Shyamalan is trying to play it safe while a thriller is supposed to unsettle and surprise its viewers.

I went into this a bit worried that it was going to be more Happening M Night rather than good M Night. Apparently this movie is a bit divisive but outside of a few goofy things I think this works overall. The shots are very deliberate and off putting and the way the violence or big moments happen just off frame is very effective at letting your imagination fill in the blanks. Like I said there are a couple of goofy things like the villainous characters that pop up and segments of the ending but I think everything else the film is going for is a success.

Conflicted as to whether I should give this a poor or a meh. Some of the performances were decent, and the concept was intriguing. But overall, the execution was poor and ended up being too predictable.

I haven't watched it, only caught the reviews/synopsis.
I will say: Read the original French comic that this was based on. It's an incredibly short and simple set of panels.

Now TELL ME how anyone thought they could make a Hollywood film out of that.
It was a philosophical prompt to make you think. It's was designed specifically without a classically satisfying narrative.

He's got some audacity to try and make a blockbuster out of it. A true adaption could have maybe won an artsy short film award or something. Count on M. Night to make the wrong choice.

Love the overall concept I think it's unique and very memorable I won't forget this one for a long time. Nice picture but very bad camera angles and unnecessary zoom in on a character's face. Sometimes the camera is pointed at a rock instead of the action which makes it frustrating. I totally get the negative reviews with this one as it's very underwhelming considering the potencial the film had with such a great concept. It will keep you thinking and guessing the whole time which makes it great in the mystery genre but it was overall very predictable.
And DON'T watch the trailer it ruins most of the movie !

I have to say, not the best of 2021 but was entertained. something different from zombies or super heros or flying cars.
some of the stuff was too obvious,
they make you carry all the hotel stuff to the beach when is the hotel job to do it. especially when they are doing a "VIP" trip, that should be your first flag
.

had some funny moment, the transaction was good from a child to an adult. all the actor looks similar

A little too predictable in places but I think a lot of that is down to the trailer revealing almost the entire movie. I would say **don't watch the trailer !!!** but if you've made it this far you know the overall premise anyway..
The casting was good, the cinematography was good, the plot was unique and interesting, and it wrapped well.. but I don't know, still a little lackluster.. Saying that, worth a watch still! Just nice to be in a movie theatre again (mine was jam packed)
