Not a lot going on in _Pearl_.
The movie never felt like horror... more like a drama with murder. As a positive, I liked the color palette: it was very vibrant and that’s not seen often, least of all in horror movies.
Mia Goth did a great job: holding a smile, while not blinking, during half the credits must have been painful. A dead giveaway of how little the story has to offer can be deduced in any comment or review about _Pearl_. What do they mention? The monologue. And yeah, it was a lot of dialog in one take, but have you not seen a Quentin Tarantino movie? He gives all of his actors that much dialog in every scene of every movie he makes.
I think it comes down to bad writing: I just never cared about any of the characters, and the movie was just forgettable.
Look, I like Ti West. _The House of the Devil_, and _The Innkeepers_ are two of my favorite horror movies. However, this, along with _X_ are just mediocre. There is nothing new brought to the table, and aside from the bright colors, there is nothing going on. Nice try, but I'm no longer a child, so I need more than pretty colors to hold my attention.
Ultimately, what can be said is if you like horror, but want a slasher that is not scary, has almost no gore, and focuses on character study, this is going to be for you. It's just not for me.
