In New York City, an insolent pickpocket, Skip McCoy, inadvertently sets off a chain of events when he targets ex-prostitute Candy and steals her wallet. Unaware that she has been making deliveries of highly classified information to the communists, Candy, who has been trailed by FBI agents for months in hopes of nabbing the spy ringleader, is sent by her ex-boyfriend, Joey, to find Skip and retrieve the valuable microfilm he now holds.

Crime movie involving a Communist plot to smuggle a MacGuffin that mostly works well, despite some odd romance scenes. The editing feels fresh and modern, and Thelma Ritter is a damn delight.

B/W looks good. Plot is okay. Actors are good. It's certainly not an awesome movie but it ain't bad either. Best part *the shack w/o electricity but with a breathtaking view *men in suits - even hobos wear suits *the old fashioned vocab of cops and crooks I don't believe the central idea though: how can she start to like McCoy?

Classic Noir thriller directed by samuel Fuller. The different characters are intoxicating and the lighting is lovely. I couldn't help thinking of the Cohen Brothers being inspired to borrow from the likes of this while making 'The Man who wasn't there'. The plot is simple yet works. The viewer starts to root for the 'loveable rogues' and the script reminds us of this by telling us things like "a man's got to eat" etc. Although the ending is a little unsatisfying it's a very decent bit of noir

Richard Widmark is quite effective in this quickly paced espionage thriller. He's a petty thief whom we see lifting something from a woman's purse on a busy subway train.
