_Pinocchio_ is like a tree in the middle of the woods: coarse, dark, and its bark is worse than its bite.

The naturalist aesthetic of the film succeeds almost too well as its so florid it's almost ugly, so baroque it can't be fixed. To get a sense of the look and feel of _Pinocchio_, imagine Hieronymus Bosch (the Northern Renaissance artist famous for his paintings of hell) illustrating children's books. Yet, if you go for that kind of thing (and I do), then you'll make like that tree in the forest and fall for _Pinocchio_.

Honestly, I can't see who the target audience is for this but, personally, _Pinocchio_ gave me would... you believe me if I said a good time?

A classic adaptation of Pinocchio's story, which is disappointing in the work of Matteo Garrone, a director with more talent for having offered that surreal point of view that the story has. In its favor, some darker moments that we had not watched in previous versions.

Parents need to be aware that this sticks closely to the original work of fiction, so it's not as light as the classic Disney adaptation. It's still a family film but as it contains the darkness from the source work, there are some moments that might be traumatic for little ones.

For me, however, it was something of a treat. It was beautifully filmed and played, with some very funny moments. The music score was great too, as were the special effects. I have marked it down a little as some scenes were cut short, but perhaps there is a director's cut out there somewhere. Worth a watch, especially for those who want a less Disneyfied version of the story.

It is a failed movie. I think the script is the one to blame. There are so many things that don't make sense that you literally have to ignore them in order to enjoy the movie... and that cannon be right. They didn't do a good job creating the universe of Pinocchio: why would a log have life? Why would a new puppet know how to talk and walk and run? Why would some people think it is weird that a puppet is alive and some others would consider it is completely normal? The answer for all these questions is JUST BECAUSE. However, the production design is amazing, the makeups and hairdressing is really great. And the actings are just OK.

@arielrodriguez That's exactly how it's intended, though. This movie stays fairly close to the events of the book. It's not meant to make sense, it's meant to show and teach morals to children in a fun and fantastical way. Alice in Wonderland is just as beautifully nonsensical. I can see why that isn't for anybody, though.

Terrible if not for the beautiful locations and the effort on using practical effects. It’s not clear who this movie is meant to be for - too childish for adults, too dull (and at times even scary) for a child. It all feels so “wooden” (pun intended) and hollow, with the most famous episodes from the original novel coming one after another mechanically and without a clear purpose, without emotion.

That hanging scene was DARK. Also the donkey being sunk must be upsetting for kids. But the cricket and tuna were just unintentionally hilariously silly. Cut costing.

I wasn't expecting much of this film, having been disappointed by numerous bad adaptations of fairy tales during the last years. But this version of Pinocchio really surprised me. It stays really close to the original story, so the film has its dark, cruel, macabre moments. However, this version is not dark in itself, rather balanced and entertaining. It took me a moment to get used to some costumes and the character design, but at the end it all added to the special style of this film, making it somehow unique and reminding me a bit of the 1999's version of Alice in Wonderland. Worth a watch for those who want less Disney and more original.
