[Festival Scope] With a theatrical mise-en-scène, Georden West challenges traditional narrative to build a collage of sequences that unfold in different years and with different characters, to reflect the history of the Playland Café, one of the first queer bars in Boston. The proposal works especially well when the eras overlap, when characters from one decade are looking at a magazine published in a later decade, or the kitchen door serves as a scene transition element. With references to Derek Jarman and Jack Smith, there is also an atmosphere close to David Lynch's surrealism.
