It's films this bad that make me wonder how people can prefer John Carpenter over Rob Zombie when it comes to horror.

Yes, Carpenter had made a couple of classics, but nothing Zombie has made comes even close to the directing disasters of Prince of Darkness or The Ward.

Is it one of those "so bad it's good" deals? Because everything about this movie -- the directing, the script, the acting, everything -- screams amateur.

One of my favorite older horror movies. It's a little "over the top" but that's John Carpenter's style. The best part about this is the unusual take on the original of good/evil.

This is one of those movies I would love to see remade. There was a lot of substance behind it but it seemed to have failed through delivery. Still a favorite

What an incredibly stupid movie. I feel like I lost brain cells watching this movie.

Another fun John Carpenter movie that ranks about the same with me as another of his efforts, "In the Mouth of Madness". Its not really scary, it's just entertaining.

The story is relatively simple and the ancient evil kept secret for 2000 years is certainly ominous. However, the apocalyptic potential of the green goo lacked any real worldwide scale sort of threat.

I fail to understand how the mirrors managed to provide a portal into Hell, though. They seemed like they existed only to show off a cool visual effect.

There are several gory moments including a pretty disturbing sequence where a dead man falls apart after being held together by cockroaches.

Victor Wong was great as Professor Birack but Donald Pleasence as the Priest was mostly corny and overdone. Again though, it was still a good time.

It might be a classic, but it doesn't really work for me. Maybe I'm not enough into supernatural demonic stuff to really appreciate it. Maybe it didn't age too well. Maybe a bit of both.

Carpenter makes a return to horror with this moody, atmospheric Devil picture. It's about as philosophical as he's gotten, which gets hokey, but is endlessly entertaining.

Definitely one of Carpenter's lesser efforts. Lots of interesting ideas, but not explored very well. Some arresting visuals, but it's all tied together with a clunky exposition-heavy script and dull characters. And the bottom line is - it's just not scary.

Typical horror movie of the late 80s with the usual ingredients. They find something mysterious, they go in to investigate, they get killed of/converted one by one yadda yadda yadda. For fans of the genre surely this is a treat, the rest of us don´t need to bother.

Such a wildly unique and cool blending of science and religion with some really interesting surrealism. Didn't expect to like it as much as I did. It charmingly pulls off both elements like very few films do. Although this film feels a bit similar to The Thing, story-wise and its contained setting, and probably features some of the least interesting cast of characters in Carpenter's work, it captures the feeling of impending doom unbelievably well and manages to creep me out with its claustrophobic terror mixed with an unknown slimy thingy and other scary supernatural shit, it’s worth the slow burn to get there. Those grainy footage effects during the shared dream sequences are genuinely terrifying. This is a must see.
