Obviously not on par with the original, but it's a damn fine sequel, especially one that was churned out of the 80s. Explores some interesting themes, and has fun with concept. Perkins is great and makes you sympathise with Bates. Plus Meg Tilly is quite nice on the eyes.

A compelling psychological thriller, Psycho II picks up where the Hitchcock classic left off. The story follows the release of Norman Bates from a mental institution as he attempts to reintegrate back into society, but forces conspire against him as he once again hears Mother’s call. The writing is rather impressive and finds a nice balance of honoring the Hitchcock classic while also exploring new territory. Anthony Perkins and Vera Miles return, and are joined by Meg Tilly and Robert Loggia. Additionally, director Richard Franklin does a pretty good job, though he’s clearly not up to Hitchcock’s level. Full of intrigue and suspense, Psycho II is a strong follow-up to a masterpiece.

I'm almost certain my dad showed this movie to me when I was younger but I didn't remember anything so I'll consider it a first time watch.

I've heard that this sequel is really good so the low rating on IMDb surprised me a bit. I really liked it from the start. When Norman Bates was released, I was certain he would have a cliché evil villain smirk on his face before continuing his killing spree.

I found it very refreshing that he really tried to become a better man. Seeing his POV of hearing and seeing his mother added to the mystery of being not sure whether he was going crazy or if someone was messing with him.

I didn't see it coming that Mary and Lila were trying to get Norman institutionalized again and I thought it was so clever.

The ending with his actual mother was unnecessary to me but then Norman came back with the shovel and that was so shocking I was okay with it.

I'm interested in seeing what Psycho III will be like!

>*"Oh Norman... You're mad, don't you know that? You're as mad as a hatter."*

Manages to be original enough with the script and the twists while continuing the storyline of the iconic first. Norman's now going crazier than he already is when paranoia sets in and he slowly descends into madness. It's more psychological and has more kills. The mystery is pretty solid it keeps you guessing the whole runtime—I did predict it though. Meg Tilly as Mary is a great addition and she creates some interesting interactions with Norman. We also get to see more of Norman as a psychopath, something the first only did for a couple seconds. Takes place mainly in the house which makes a change. On a filmmaking level, it's absolutely nothing like the first. Great ending.

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Psycho II’:

1. That final shot with the house and Norman was gorgeous.

2. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about this story until the final reveal, because it kinda felt a bit disjointed in the back half, but it was a solid sequel in the end. However, it makes you appreciate how much of a masterpiece the original was — and how vastly this one pales in comparison.

3. I hate to say it, but Perkins’ performance leaves a lot to be desired here. Incredibly wooden and one-note.

This is always better than I remember, and I've liked it from the start. Part of me wishes they would have left the "real mom" alive at the end for a fun sequel but in today's world of movies existing solely to set up another thing, I do appreciate all the beats of this arc happening in the same movie.
