I like this movie because the plot is interesting and because the cast is amazing. Everyone acts very well. Although the plot loses the incendiary sexual theme by the end.

This was never going to be akin to ‘Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom’ given Fox Searchlight Pictures ties to Disney. It is a story loosely based on the writing process, content and censorship of said writings of the Marquis de Sade whilst imprisoned in Charenton asylum. It also looks at the apparent double standards of the political and religious fervour prevalent at the time. Give it a watch, there are far worse offerings out there

How could they have gotten this movie so wrong given the talent on the cast? The movie was just kind of all over the place. At first it (correctly) seemed to be about forbidden pleasures and desires before dropping the sexual appeal in favor of drama (and at times, comedy). The movie just didn't seem to work once the sexual tension subsided. And for some reason Rush didn't work - it might be that every time I see him I think of Captain Barbosa as his mannerisms are often the same.
