So unoriginal, watching this just feels like watching a recycled version of every movie it's based on. Snyder saying that this is his version of *Star Wars* doesn't excuse any of it, that's just lazy.

It's a good looking movie overall but the set and action pieces lack originality, there's nothing visually memorable here. The same can be said about the characters, they're so incredibly run-of-the-mill and cliché. I like the storyline of recruiting members throughout the movie but it's done in such a repetitive way and we barely get to know any of them. Not enough interactions between them either. It's as if scenes are missing from the movie to connect everyone.

There's at least a lot of action throughout the movie, especially in the second half. While they're nothing we haven't seen before, they feel pretty engaging and the slow motion is used well—I'd even say not enough slow motion for a Snyder movie. If I had to pick, my two favorites would be the "riding the *Harry Potter* Hippogriff, *Game of Thrones* style" and the "Sith woman vs. Spider woman" sequences.

There's a few exceptions but the acting is bad, unnatural cringe dialogue, underwhelming story and too much exposition dumping. Very disappointing overall. Not excited for part 2. Apparently there's an R-rated version of this, why not release the two versions at once?!

A kind review to a total piece of crap. Star Wars (which I love) was excusable in 1978 but to do sci-fi like this today that makes no sense is pretty unescusable. Why not table the cash and talent and make something that makes sense?

@hirkiti yeah I don't know what Snyder was thinking about doing something so obviously plagiarizing and old fashioned... it's a basic recipe plain bologna sandwich alright, but it's edible.<br /> <br /> It's a 4 right now but it might become a 3 eventually, when I realize how forgettable this is.<br /> <br /> The same can be said about most of the stuff Netflix uses money on.

Saw an advance screening of this one.

This is one of the most original and creative films I have ever seen. In the words of Casetify defending their copyright theft: it's "a bastion of originality".

Let's get a quick rundown of the plot:

Some farmers are chilling on their farm, enjoying their peaceful life. They have enough grain for themselves and a little extra. Big evil outsiders come in, and want their grain. This is a problem, because they want all of it. So the evil outsiders announce that they'll be back in ten weeks to take all of their grain, and boy howdy had they better have that grain ready, or else bad things will befall this little peaceful farming town. So the peaceful farmers decide to send out two of their people to go and find some SPACE WARRIORS:tm: to defend them from the evil empire.

At this point, you're probably saying to yourself, "This sounds familiar", but I assure you, it's a story never been seen before on film. Not once.

*checks notes*
- Seven Samurai
- The Magnificent Seven
- Battle Beyond the Stars
- A Bug's Life
- Star Trek Enterprise: Marauders
- The Magnificent Seven (again)
- etc, etc, etc

Now, what makes this one different, is that it's with Star Wars vibes!

*rechecks notes*
Oops Mandalorian did this one too in S1E4, "Sanctuary".

So what this movie lacks in originality, it surely makes up for in characters, right? Wrong! Out of the six or seven main characters in this film, all of them get less development than a random spider villain that shows up briefly halfway through. There are two interesting characters, one of which is the main character, Kora, whose flashback stories are infinitely more interesting than her present predicament, and Jimmy, a robot voiced wonderfully by Anthony Hopkins, who disappears after about five minutes of screentime.

This movie consists of the main characters going to a place, seeing a person do something cool, stowing that person in their spaceship for later, repeated a few times. We get a cool scene of Shirtless Guy trying to ride a bird lion thing, which is lifted straight from Avatar, a very derivative film in it's own right. There's a scene of Asian Sword Lady taking down a spider person, which is cool but again has no impact on the story or other characters whatsoever. It's a list of cool action scenes Snyder wanted to string together and came up with some very thin reasoning to get there. It also has the advantage of being a "Part 1", which means the movie is all setup and no payoffs, so nothing really happens in this film. The Moon does not Rebel.

The main Nazi Guy does get killed by our main hero, which should be a pretty permanent thing given that he is in fact dead. I almost gave Snyder a pass here for this next part, because earlier in the movie, he sets up a character that can bring things back to life! Holy reveal, Batman, she's still alive! Nope, they hook him up to some hoses and put him in a water balloon, and he's all better and more ready than ever to subjugate some farmers on a back moon somewhere for some grain, sans the re-aliving princess.

I will give a little credit to the visuals of the film; they're outstanding. This movie was great to look at, even better if you only look at the trailer and don't have to deal with the plot, which is what this film was designed for. Most of the exciting trailer shots were five second flashbacks which weren't fleshed out. I watched more slow motion shots of rice in this movie than actual characters interacting.

To paraphrase Honest Trailers' criticism of Nolan's Tenet: This movie is not Zack Snyder at his best, but it's certainly Zack Snyder at his most.

All that being said, I had a great time. Solid movie. Would recommend. Can't wait for Part 2.

@antiwoke the star wars style wasn't the unoriginality that I had a problem with, the plot was, I loved the world and visuals of the film

If it’s so original and creative why did you give only 6?

There is a reason why this was dropped even by Disney Star Wars.
The whole movie is a meh. I could sleep through segments of it, and it wouldn't affect the story one bit.
Sadly, got through it all wide awake.
About at half of the movie, I started to force myself to power through to the end,
but not one unpredictable thing happened during the entire runtime.
The real problem begins when you try to deconstruct it scene by scene.
If you begin finding all that is wrong with it, you cannot stop, and it takes a review longer that the script of the movie...
From bad script (felt like patchwork), stiff dialog, lousy characters, bad acting, bad accents, predictable tropes and stereotypes,
to the terrible by-the-book directing with fight slow-mos and quick cuts.
The CGI ranges from OK to terrible, but even practical effects are bad and look cheap, not to mention the costumes that look so anachronistic and out of touch.
If you have free time to spend, dont watch this, instead watch again the original source movies.
Bottom line, and the biggest problem with this movie is that there was nothing good that caught my eye.
It is one of those movies that you watch maybe once and never again.

More garbage from Zaddy, this is a modern blueprint for what not to do when you’re making operatic sci-fi/fantasy. You could point at the obvious issues, such as the worldbuilding and story ripping off every other property in existence without putting much of its own spin on it (_Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Dune, Harry Potter, Mad Max, Excalibur, Seven Samurai, The Matrix_ to only name a few), but that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what’s wrong here. Snyder’s often praised for being this great visual stylist, but with _Rebel Moon_ he might just deliver his most poorly directed film. Multiple shots are out of focus, the score is really manipulative and overblown, the staging of the action feels amateurish, there’s often a lack of proper depth of field (it kinda feels like those _Star Wars_ shows on D+ due to the poor use of the volume stages) and he’s generally wanking off way too much with all the slo-mo here. Moreover, this has one of the worst scripts of the year due to all of the cheesy, overwitten dialogue and ridiculous amounts of exposition. It’s very hard to find a scene in this where the presentation and writing are somewhat organic or manage to create meaning in a way that feels artistically instinctual. Instead, it’s this lifeless mismatch of stale ideas. Add to that the fact that Snyder doesn’t know how to emphasize the strengths of the limited performers he’s working with here (besides Hounsou and Hopkins, who can handle themselves regardless of the director), and you can only conclude that Disney made the right decision by rejecting this.

@jordyep I can't believe that you are right that Disney made a good decision not to hire the guy to make SW film. He could've hack the property of the SW franchise (like what happened to DC comics brand) where he brings his cult fanboys to defend him 4 their entire life

**Rebel Moon is a flawed space epic that can’t compete with Star Wars or Dune but offers some fun for genre fans that don’t take it too seriously.**

Rebel Moon adds the small, growing resistance struggling against a galactic tyrannical empire of Star Wars to the small village searching for a band of noble warriors to save them of Seven Samurai (or the Magnificent Seven or The Three Amigos), but falls short of capturing the greatness of its inspirations. However, while Rebel Moon Part One might be self-aggrandizing and annoyingly predictable, it’s still a fun movie. Director Zack Snyder skillfully constructs a visually stunning universe, filled with vibrant colors and innovative creature effects. Although the characters lack substantial backstories, they still manage to captivate the audience's curiosity. Snyder also cleverly includes intriguing hints that would undoubtedly entice viewers to return for a potential sequel. Despite grappling with shallow writing and occasional subpar CGI, Rebel Moon successfully held my interest, kept me entertained, and left me willing to give Part Two a chance.
