Hummingbird is a very different movie than we are use to seeing from Jason Statham. Instead of over the top action, we get a somewhat more serious character driven approach about redemption. This is one of Stathams better performances. He does full blown action movies really well and is one of my personal favourites at it, this movie shows he can tone it down and act like a real character dealing with his own demons. Their are a few fight scenes in the movie and are well choreographed.

This is Steven Knights directional debut, which he also written himself and I think he shows promise to be a good director, however based on the writing in this film, that is where the biggest problems lie. It is quite a stunning film to look at, capturing the visuals of the dark gritty streets of London in a realistic way. The way the film is shot is really well done. Along with the writing, the plot is also a bit of an issue I had with. Even though the film deals with redemption, I was struggling to know what the actual plotline of the movie was, We had 3 different things all happening, with the prostitute killer, the Chinese crime syndicate and the whole relationship with the nun. None if flowed together very well, it killed the pacing and all of them trying to come together at the end did not work for me.

I liked the idea of Jason's character returning from war and trying to cope on the streets with PTSD, but the flashbacks they used I felt were pointless and didn't add much. Agata Buzek does a decent job as the nun who grows close to Joey and tries to help him, however I found her subplot to be quite uninteresting, She was quite a boring character to me and I just didn't care for her. I would have preferred the film to have spent more time on his ex lover and daughter much more and focused on their relationship. Even though their only a couple of scenes with them, they were my favourite parts in the movie and I wanted to know more about what happened in their past.

This is not a bad movie, I did enjoy Jason in this role, it just needed better writing and a more tighter plot which made it quite average in the end.
