Like parachuting, the initial rush is exhilarating but in the end it slows down and leaves you hanging.

Visually, however it's an epic Greek tragedy, an urban opera... The directing, cinematography and the beautifully long sequences make this good enough to make wish I'd seen it in IMAX.

Some say "Athena" has little substance in terms of Story. While this may be true, this didn't stop films like "The Raid" to be great either. Athena has strong imagery and an impressive 10 minute opening-"plan-séquence". Sadly it couldn't hold my attention the full runetime. Amazing camera-work too.

Holy shit, the first 10 minutes are insane.

The story ain't anything special or interesting but the entire movie is a goddamn adrenaline rush all the way through.

An absolute visual spectacle that I wish I could have seen on the big screen.

This was such a waste of a movie. Basically no story, I don’t care about any of the characters, not much action or fighting, just a solid hour of screaming, yelling, barking orders randomly and swearing. Don’t waste your time watching this. 2/10. 1 star.

You have to see how much the French like barricades.

Sad story of a younger brothers death and how thing's spiral out of control in a mayhem of social unrest, which gets all of the brother's involved. Thing's get very chaotic. :thumbsup_tone1:

More of the same as a lot of films based on neighbour rebellions

[Netflix] A great choreography that achieves its goal of engaging us in the battle, that kind of "French revolution" of the slums against police violence that creates a spectacular and brilliant visual form, but also offers a deep reflection on disaffection of the marginalized, the lost identity of generations that are not foreigners because they were born in France but do not feel like French citizens either. Co-written by the director of "Les Misérables" (2019), it is something like the adrenaline version of that one.

You start the film with this crazy opening sequence, certainly memorable. The movie remains fascinating, from a technical point of view, for the whole duration of the movie ; those long takes are an orgasm for the eyes, the scene where there are motorcycles going around the cops and meanwhile shooting those fireballs at them reminded me of Harry Potter lmao but still very beautiful visually.

But unfortunately, the biggest flaw of the film and what ruins it, is the plot, totally absent : you are plunged into this world of chaos without first having an explanation of what is going on, why they behave the way they do, the various backstories of the characters... nothing is explained.

Big shame, because even the acting however is good (I recommend watching in the original language, i.e. French)

The plot is not so original and the themes are perhaps better explored in other movies (like Shorta\Enforcement for example) but the action is marvellous and unique.
Best action film 2022 and one of the best action films ever.
Shame it was released on Netflix with its crappy picture and audio quality and not in theaters and on Bluray.

what a show!!! epic in all its parts from the direction to the music. truly a sublime production and a heart-rending story that keeps you glued to the screen from start to finish.

Epic, it gives me ancient greek stories vibe. The director is good at long take which made audience intense. IMAX level vision

My heart was racing the whole time it's quite the adrenaline rush. Everything from the soundtrack, camera work, look, and the ever so scary state of the city looks amazing. It's scary that something like this can happen anytime and it really shows the brutality of civil war. I was blown away by the first action sequence and the movie actually keeps that momentum going throughout. Because that momentum was so high throughout when you get to the ending it's easy to get underwhelmed. That's how I felt but I still loved the journey to get there.

The story is a bit lacking but the way it is told more than makes up for it.
It is very intense and the numerous sequence shots are impressive and contribute greatly to make the tension palpable.

The opening sequence with spectacular imagery and epic action elevates the movie to such level that the ending felt flat. Camerawork is excellent, so is the direction. Both the lead characters looked in their element especially Karim in the first half. If only for some depth in the story, it would have been a masterpiece. Giving it a 7 (mainly for the visuals and score)

I enjoyed the frenetic pace and camerawork here. Some of the message gets lost in the chaos but it was a worthy watch. Not on the level of the Raid movies, but a respectable effort. 6.5.
