In 1968, engineer Giorgio Rosa established the independent state called "The Isle of Roses" off the coast of Rimini, built on a platform outside the territorial waters, with Esperanto as the official language. The Italian authorities did not take it well because the micronation was seen as an expedient to not pay taxes on the revenues obtained thanks to the arrival of numerous tourists and curious people.

a truly remarkable movie, that gets across a beautiful depiction of an actual historical fact. I watched it in my native language (Italian) which probably made it even funnier and interesting, I heard some of it in english from the trailer and it seemed like the dub was made horrendously. Either way, a really crazy story well narrated, well worth a watch

indeed, as a story telling movie, there's nothing special. i slept twice and watched it over 3 days. but as being apparently very real to the history of what happened, with minor adaptations, it's an amazing piece of art. way under appreciated. disclaimer: i also vwant to create a country (but in the land and very peacefully), and the project, called ahoxus, have already started in portugal.
