The special that launched 100 more. Probably not the best animated. The story is creeky and a little weird, actually. But it makes up with pure, unadulterated charm. Burl Ives shines as the balladeer and Bille Mae Richards is pitch perfect in the role of Rudolph. My favorite, though, remains Hermey (voiced by Paul Soles) who was sorely missed in future Rudolph outings like the Shiny New Year. Great stuff and not to be missed.

Is obviously a bit dated now, but The Girls enjoy watching it every year.

This was released on my first birthday, so I grew up watching it on network TV and looked forward to seeing it every year. If Christmas is happiness, tradition, and joy, then, for me personally, this is the most Christmas movie of all time.

Man, Rudolph gets such a bad wrap from the other reindeer's. Unbelievable.

From Rankin & Bass comes the animated Christmas classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Told in flashback, Sam the Snowman (voiced by Burl Ives) recounts the story of the “most famous reindeer of all,” Rudolph, who grew up as a misfit but ended up saving Christmas just as all hope seemed lost. Ives does a brilliant job as narrator and provides a number of delightful songs (including “A Holly Jolly Christmas” and “Silver and Gold”). In fact, all of the songs are rather fun and catchy. And the stop-motion animation is really quite good; with some wonderful character designs. However, the storytelling is a little weak and everything seems to resolve itself without much effort. While it’s not perfect, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a magical film that speaks to the child in all of us.
