A box office flop - possibly because it had no superheroes or CGI - this film is better than you have been led to believe. Evocative of the era, with a cosy old-fashioned feel, the story of the final days of Howard Hughes, as imagined as they may be, is a mostly engaging tale. Beatty shines as Hughes and he hasn't lost his touch as a director either.

Warren Beatty is making an effort here but Rules Don't Apply ends up being unintentionally messy. The movie is well shot and Beatty, Lilly Collins and Alden Ehrenreich are all great but the interactions between the characters can feel really awkward and there are some scenes that drag on for way too long. I do think that there is still some greatness left in Beatty and hopefully this is not his last project as we had to wait 15 years for this movie.

I was expecting something more romantic, but I guess the whole movie was far from that. I got a bit confused by the whole concept as well. I took me a while to really get the story, but once I did it was pretty good. It was a bit vague but one of the main character Howard Hughes was a bit vague. So, yea.

Okay, while I'm writing this I realised I actually have no idea what to tell you about this movie. The story was a bit strange, it wasn't a really "special" movie but the actors were great and so was the camera work. It was a beautiful movie to watch (with very nice cars) but the story wasn't really strong.

...you ain't wrong about that.

I mean, a young Han Solo jizzed in his pants and Lily Collins doesn't have the personality of a salted cracker, as we thought. Warren Beatty took time off to come back for this? That's sad.

This is the strangest, well produced movie I have ever watched. I understand it is trying to mirror the insanity of the last days of Howard Hughes but it’s just so bizarre. I’d advise you give it a pass unless you are in a very strange mood. I give this movie a 4 (strange) out of 10. [Comedy? Farce?]
