Great horror thriller about Jigsaw who chooses "unworthy" people not appreciating their lives (like drug addicts) and gives them 2 choices: die or make a major sacrifice (like cutting of your leg, slicing up the belly of an innocent, etc.). He communicates with his victims via video tapes. Very cool ending and great plot-twists!

First movie of James Wan and you already know that he's got some talent. Not to mention Leigh Whannell who write the story.

Giving it a re-watch for the 31 Days Of Horror. Have never finished the series, I think the time has come.

Amazing what you can accomplish on a budget of 1 million dollars. Great acting, directing, and story. A horror classic with an amazing twist.

Great first film by James Wan manages to stay focused on the main storyline with the ability to also jump around with a combination of flashbacks or interconnected stories that keeps it thrilling the entire time.

While the franchise as a whole has a reputation for being "torture porn" and a gorefest, the first Saw movie is actually a fairly capable crime thriller not unlike Se7en. While not the best written movie I've ever watched, it was fairly entertaining and managed to surprise until the very end.

I do not understand why this movie seems to be so popular. I found it boring, disjointed and generally poor.

One of the best psychological thrillers ever made, IMO. There were some pretty gruesome scenes but the overwhelming theme of this particular film was psychothriller, and it played the part. I've watched the entire franchise (and am currently watching the entire set again for the third time) but in all honesty, every single one of the sequels bores me when compared to this one. The original is far and away the best.

NOT BAD TO KICK-START
THE FRANCHISE OFF, TO WHAT WE KNOW IT TO BE TODAY.
NOT REALLY HELD UP ALL THAT WELL OVER TIME, GOOD FOR THE DAY TO SET A NEW HORROR GENRE OFF, GOOD THAT THE WRITERS TOOK NOTES ON WHAT WORKS BEST AND WHAT DOESN'T. FORGET ALL THAT CRIM COP BS
WE WANT ELABORATE TRAPS AND PUZZLES, 8+ PEOPLE ALL CLEVERLY INTERCONNECTED
LOTS OF BLOOD GUTS GORE AND BODIES GETTING TORN TO SHREAD'S. THAT'S IT, JOB DONE AND ONE VERY SATISFIED HORROR FAN.
AND THEY GET DO MUCH BETTER AND INTERESTING
EACH MOVIE. GLAD THEY SORT THE PACING PROBLEM OF NUMBER 1 OUT TO.
COME ON LET'S KEEP IT MOVING......NEXT

Watched it this time with my grandmother... yeah, really. To my surprise and amusement, she liked it a lot. After going on a personal marathon watching the later Saw movies, it's almost jarring how tame James Wan and Leigh Whannel's original is in comparison. Hardly any gore is shown and anything extreme is kept cut away or tastefully presented. This low budget endeavor relies a lot on the writing and fast editing from Kevin Greutert. It's already a classic, so I don't need to explain any details or make a recommendation. I remember my parents walked out of the theater, originally, in complete shock at the twist that came way out of left field. As giddy as I get at the sight of gratuitous and silly hardcore violence, I love how restrained and accessible the one that started it all is. Bring on Aquaman.

Consider it was 2004. This was a great, creative horror movie. Shame the followups turned into gore porn.

More of a thriller than horror. Very Hitchcockian.

I like low budget horror movies because directors can get creative with how they tell a story. Saw is kept me guessing what was going to happen next and other than some scenes feeling like a soap opera, I enjoyed it.

Saw is like a rusty blade with deep cuts that gets under your skin and then takes out a piece of your heart.

Well thought out, impeccably written and perfectly structured, Saw was revolutionary horror for its time. A great cast completes this motion picture and the end result is a strong beginning to a formidable horror franchise.

See Saw
