Schneider vs. Bax

It’s like a Dutch Coen brothers film. Think _Burn After Reading_, but instead of playing around with spy tropes it does so with western and hitman tropes. Great characters and a really fun, chaotic plot that kept me engaged, though it ends in a way I found slightly unsatisfying. You want it to wrap up in a way that’s as twisted as the rest of the story, but what we’re given is actually pretty straightforward. There’s a lot of understated dark comedy, it’s never quirky in an obvious way and the actors all understand what type of film they’re making, so that never breaks the tension. It’s very well shot for the most part (I don’t quite get why he’s sometimes going for this overexposed look, is it to reflect the main character being a junkie?). His use of location and sound effects for the swamp adds some nice atmosphere, though I would’ve like some more score. The sum of all its parts doesn’t add up to something deep, but I found it quite entertaining and unique. 6.5/10
