i plan to rewatch this soon so maybe will comment again, but i just want to say this movie is incredibly important, and continues to hold a special place in my heart to this day. for being made in the early 2000s when female sexuality was still a punchline and a myth to most people, and bdsm was seen as a weird outlier fetish, it's realistic and raw and somehow still strangely beautiful. the characters are undeniably damaged at certain points, but the way the director doesn't shy away from showing all that damage is important, and feels necessary rather than exploitative. it's also a good movie to demonstrate that consent can be communicated in a myriad of ways, and that power imbalances can be positive and healthy if the people involved want that imbalance in place.
