Cronenberg's first real movie, and it's still a rather effective one. The body-horror he became famous for, is used to good effect here. As is the claustrophobic setting. And Sex Zombies? how can you not be interested by that?

The first 45 minutes is quite slow and only has a good few moments. Gets going in the second half but I think they should have just stuck to the parasite only being able to infect people through sexual contact. Worth a watch though

"Sex is the invention of a very clever venereal disease"

Shivers is David Cronenberg's first feature film and in it we find all the themes thoroughly explored in his filmography.
-Sex, the consequences of the liberation of this instinct or its repression
-The body, its oddities and its conflicting relationship with the mind: does the mind control the body or is it the opposite?
-Technology, science and how they can affect the human body and mind

Shivers is horror at its finest because it uses the genre to investigate interesting themes and pose unsettling questions.

Still flawed, but this is Cronenberg coming into his own. His first film that is actually enjoyable.

It’s weird watching this messy, schlocky, deliberately offensive movie straight after Cronenberg’s first three films _Stereo_, _Crimes of the Future_ and _Secret Weapons_. It’s like he was infected by his own sex parasites between movies, they’re clearly all made by the same filmmaker but while the early ones were elegant, carefully composed, calm and intellectual, _Shivers_ is amateurish, chaotic and visceral. There was a slight undertone of anger in _Crimes of the Future_ that explodes into rage against bourgeois repression here.

Oh Shivers, I get that you had to be so low budget, but did you have to be so cheap?

A turd monster turns everyone into sex zombies and that should've been the name of the movie.

On the plus side, the action begins right away, on the minus side: everything else. Soft core horror nudity (it is 1975, remember), a building manager and a security guard and a building doctor who work alone on one shift that lasts 24 hours per day, and a monster that looks like a plastic turd make the entire movie look like shit.
