I remember to go watching this at the cinema back in 2002 when it was released, I was 12 years old and it scared me a lot! Then I re-watched it again one or two times more on tv, still at a younger age. Now re-watching it again and now that it doesn't scared me anymore, I could enjoy it better and it was a totally different experience.
At the beginning of the film the suspense is great! We can only see shadows and hear frightening sounds. That's on of the greatest aspects of the film, it recreates the fear that human beings have from the unknown.
I think this film is not a simple sci-fi film about aliens or about life in other planets but it is a film that puts you wondering about other questions like faith and what you are capable of doing for the ones you love. Are we alone in the world? Our life is based on luck? Or everything is just a coincidence? Or the signs were all there all of the time? I really love way the question is left for the characters to decide but also for us viewers.
Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix are both great and the two kids were absolutely amazing!
I think M. Night Shyamalan deserves more consideration for having written and directed this one, I guess some people have missed the whole point of it and consider it absurd.
I really enjoyed watching it again.

I guess not many people love this movie as much as I do. I love the score, the performances, the concept, the mystery. Very well executed movie by M. Night Shyamalan one of my favorites by him

This scared the crap out of me when I was a kid and it still does. The effects look a lot worse than I remember but are still passable. This deals with a lot of themes of faith that I never picked up on as a kid. I have a hard time believing Joaquin Phoenix and Mel Gibson could be brothers but they both did a good job. The ending is shot well and tense. I know some people have a problem with it but I don't.

This movie was not only terrible but very boring from beginning to end, and I like M Night Shyamalan normally (I liked the Sixth Sense) but this movie, I don't get what anyone sees in it, the characters are a bunch of idiots, the children they're children ok, but the two adults are barely adults, they're so scared throughout the whole movie even though there's nothing to be scared of. And the ending, that just makes no sense. I really don't get why they call this a thriller, there was no thrill and the mystery was only there for a couple of minutes and was not the type of mystery you really want to solve, it also wasn't scary to me at all. I really regret wasting nearly 2 hours of my time on this crap of a movie.

Just watched this for the first time in 2023, but I've seen Scary Movie 3 multiple times. I had no idea that the whole movie was parodied, I assumed it was just a few things and that there would be more to this film than just the parodied scenes. Nope.

So I feel like I've already seen this movie before even watching it. The only difference is that Scary Movie 3 was more entertaining, had a more interesting plot, and had a twist ending whereas this movie just had slow footsteps and slow panoramic shots that didn't lead to anything.

I thought maybe it was supposed to be a psychological horror, but that also fell flat. A psychological horror usually entails getting the viewer to question things. But there was nothing to question. They established and showed that the aliens were real, removing any mystery. So what was I supposed to be frightened about, just the prospect of aliens existing? Maybe that would scare people in the 1950s but 2002 when we'd already had a lot of exposure to the idea of aliens existing in countless other movies, tv shows, and other media?

Aliens have space ships, but can not break wooden doors, attack a plant with 60% water and rain!! I hate these nonsense supra natural movies that want to guide you to religion with an unbelievable story.
A kick to sci-fi genre.

Speaking as someone who has asthma, they did a horrible job with that scene at the end. Why is the kid just staring off into oblivion, you cant breathe, it does nothing with your motor skills. Dumb. If his boy would have died he would have still hated god. I don't see the point they were trying to land here lol. Only love god when things go your way? lol

>*"Is it possible that there are no coincidences?"*

A perfect blend of alien invasion and family drama, both were equally interesting which is where the magic happens. **Signs** is about grief, faith, loneliness and family: how family comes together or falls apart in times of crisis. It also has a lot to say about coincidences. I see the aliens as God, for Gibson's character it's quite revelating and makes a good analogy for his faith. Interesting that he was the only character that needed to see it to believe it, which is understandable given everything he's been through with God.

Beautifully shot, great score, smart camera angles and brilliant use of silence when you can't hear a sound something's definitely wrong. I love the farm and corn field setting it's so perfect in a horror movie. The scares are effective and it's paranoia and anxiety inducing. The third act didn't age very well and the CGI either, it feels kinda goofy but Shyamalan made a good ending so that's a win!

Does anyone else keep thinking of *Scary Movie* while watching this? I'll admit I chuckled a few times.

For better or worse, M. Night Shyamalan movies will make you feel some sort of way. Confused, thrilled, shocked, disgusted...but it is ALWAYS something. Signs is one of his first big flicks, and it is one of his more consistently and positively received movies. It works. I don't think it is his best, but it is a good introduction movie to watch he does.

Rating: 3.5/5 - 8/10 - Would Recommend

I loved this movie when it was originally released, but I wasn't sure it would stand the test of time. It did. i found the acting believable, some scenes very intense and suspenseful and the movie had a sense of humour to balance everything out.

Like crop circles in a wheat field, it looks pretty and it flows well, but you can see the strings attached.

I don't know who the casting director was but they had a great eye for talent as this film features Abigail Breslin (before Little Miss Sunshine and Zombieland), Rory Culkin (way before Lords of Chaos and Scream 4) and Joaquin Phoenix (before everything).

One of M. Night Shyamalan's better efforts from a directorial point of view, he sadly works so hard on a twist ending he probably felt the strain when he reached that far.
5.5, not really my kinda movie, went in knowing nothing about it and continued not really "getting the message" from the movie, the ending was a little bit over the top for me, sure cute but a little too much
I originally thought the alien would help the boy, surprised how it turned out, also remembered me of that one monster in spn xD
3 Thoughts After Re-Watching ‘Signs’:

1. I’m not a fan of Mel Gibson as a human by any means, but it’s difficult to deny how incredible his performance was in this film. The entire cast was wonderful.

2. I don’t think I had ever felt as much tension as I did when I first saw this in the theater. The buildup was fantastic and effective. The creep factor was solid. I literally screamed at one point _(that damn party scene)_, and remained on the edge of my seat until the final scene.

3. There’s so much here that connects one thing to another, beyond the epiphanies at the end. This was a well thought-out story with a solid message. M. Night’s best film in my opinion.

Spoiler: the other twist is supposed to be they were demons. Not aliens.
People think water killing them is silly. Since they eat humans. What if it was holy water in the Gibson house. Since he was a priest. Decent him losing his faith.

Signs is a great thriller. This movie had been on my watch list for a very long time and I was glad I finally got to watch it. It’s a honestly pretty scary movie, sure it has bad CGI but that shouldn’t take away from the thrills. The plot is good it has a lot more of a faith related story at the center of it. The acting is great Mel Gibson gives a good performance and so does Joaquin Phoenix. The little kids give good performances too, signs was Abigail Breslin first role in a movie. It’s directed well by M. Night definitely one of his better movies. The cinematography is great and the score is creepy. The scares in the movie are good it builds up the whole invasion was very well done. Overall it’s a movie that you ether hate or love and I loved it.

I like Mel Gibson. I am surprised that I haven't seen this movie before. I enjoyed it even though I was never into the aliens invading earth type of movies. :) It is still a decent thriller movie.
