_Singapore Sling_ is one of the strangest films I have ever seen, and that's saying something. Note: I am not talking about the kind of strange where it's just random images for arthouse snobs to marvel at - I'm looking at you, David Lynch.
Truly one of a kind. This film contains so much while refusing to fit into any category. The best way I could describe it is an erotic noir parody. Think if David Cronenberg directed a Mel Brooks screenplay. According to the research I did, that's not too far off: see, this is supposed to be somewhat a spoof of a noir movie, _Laura_ (1944). I've never seen it, but I want to, just to get a deeper understanding.
If you go into this with any exceptions of what you think it should be, you'll likely be disappointed. This movie is playing by its own rules and doesn't give a damn what the viewer thinks. You're either okay with that or you're not.
So, the movie is a period piece - although it's never explicitly stated, it's likely set in the 1940s - it has the look and feel of a classic noir, only with occasional anachronistic moments. There is graphic nudity. There is a small amount of gore. These is piss, and vomit. Given the list, one would think this is a dark and deeply disturbing film, but it's really not. It's a comedy. It's funny. It's meant to be funny.
I can't believe that this was made in 1990. Outside of it staying so true to its 1940s aesthetic, this feels like a much younger movie. Truly ahead of its time.
The more I think about it, there is no way to review this movie that will do it any justice. If you love weird, like really fucking weird, movies, this is a must watch.
