Decent at keeping up the suspense, but by all means don't watch the trailer. It tells the entire story.

Horror movie trailers seem to be the worst at spoiling movies

I love watching movies that make me feel things and nothing does it better than horror. The first half of Sinister was genuinely unsettling and created a very tense atmosphere. The second half was a bit of a letdown as they over explained and tried to show every loose thread being wrapped up.

Heart rate is my favorite way to measure how frightening a horror movie is.
Resting: 58
Average during Sinister: 91
Peak during Sinister: 122

Scare rating: 8/10

The film offers relatively little that is new to the genre and the storyline telegraphs its surprises much too early. Despite this, it still manages to create a deeply unsettling atmosphere throughout the film, especially in the first half. The found footage of the murders are especially creepy. It is a shame the second half of the film does not live up to the promise of the first and in the final moments, the filmmakers feel the need to explain far too much of what has already been implied. Worth watching though.

So much fun seeing Ziggy Sobotka in this one!

Anyway Sinister is a well-made mainstream horror movie. It is directed by Scott Derrickson who does a great job creating a scary atmosphere. Like the way he used those 8mm tapes. Lovely! And how about Vincent D'Onofrio showing up as a doctor of the occult on a "zoom call"! Always a delight seeing him show up.

Ethan Hawke is sublime here in this horror gem. The way he slowly gets more and more frustrated is well played. However he is very attached to that woolen vest. Does he ever wash it? I also liked the look of the Bughuul. Very well designed.

But in the end, the final act of the movie is way too predictable. Even the final "jump scare". Up until that the end I had a very good feeling about Sinister. But it kind of let me down. Which you could see as a huge compliment!

Anyway Sinister is another solid 2010's horror movie, it is dark especially for a mainstream one.

Even though the creators of "Sinister" keep pulling the same stupid stuff that Horror movies are infamous for, it has some awfully scary scenes and shots that elevate it above most other Horror flicks made recently. It's at its best when we are exploring the secrets of the house and watching some genuinely frightening old home movies with Ethan Hawke's character. The problem is, the movie isn't that interesting unless he's exploring the awful box of old movies. When he is, it's really good.

As is par for the course, the family stays in the house way too long. No one with an ounce of common sense would hang around with all of the horrible things happening. Then again, it's easy to see how Hawke's character would be intrigued by the mysteries unfolding around him. Well, at least until the really terrible things start occurring. There are also a number of jump scares which I continue to hate. Jump scares are not scary, they are just shocking and cheap.

"Sinister" did always entertain me, though. And the ending is hopelessly grim and really disturbing. I have to give it props for being fearless in that regard.

Definitely creepy but awful, predictable plot. Cast is mediocre as hell. Don't think it's worth the watch when there's easily a better horror movie out there.

Some list had this movie on the 20 scariest ever.... well, not really. Interesting beginning but very predicable on the 2nd half. disturbing imagens, a tense soundtrack and a gore ending are the strongest but don’t fully compensate some bad acting,
repetitive storyline and very cheesy ghosts.

I actually enjoyed this film, was hoping it wasn't going to be one of those films where they run around with a camera constantly, luckily it wasn't. A decent horror movie with a twist.

Well it was definitely better than those shaky camera horror movies or torture porn.. My question is what was the dude from Slipknot doing there ;)

"Sinister" is a horror film with all the right ingredients to be a fascinating suspense movie, but the poor writing and the lack of ideas at the end of the storyline give us a very limited but well presented thriller. The suspense on "Sinister" thanks to its soundtrack and video editing is superb, you really get to feel Ethan's fear on a lot of the scenes. "Sinister" is not the best, but is definately not the worst, sure it could had been so much better. But still, is a very watchable film with very decent scary moments for those that are fans of suspense.
