This movie goes back to basics and really recaptures the classic spirit of man (or woman in this case) vs Predator.

Amber does a great turn as Naru, a Comanche trying to show that she CAN hunt and ends up in a battle against the almighty predator. The evolution of the story is a well paced and the combat encounters are well planned and satisfying.

Aesthetically the predator is a more raw tribal type than we've seen before but is well put out.

There's a few CGI moments that could have done with a little longer is post but on the whole it's pretty good.

Fun, exciting and a classic Predator tale without all the fluff, much better than what we've seen in recent years.

Also the addition of a dog companion is fun :-) Although we are in a world where every movie likes to show strong women I think this movie framed it very well and the Comanche and time frame were a great choice.

8/10

If you have seen the legendary movie Predator, this may look like an empty shell. It is a similar story but in a feminine way. Supposed to be a prequel but nah. 5/10

Somewhere between a 6 and a 7 for me. Prey is a very good direct to streaming movie, and even without the Predator franchise attached to it , it's still a successful film. Stripping the tired Predator franchise of all the things that bogged it down, Prey keeps things simple. Primal humans who have to hunt or risk being hunted, up against a technological killing machine who hunts for dominance and sport.

Amber Midthunder is extremely good in the lead role. She's not Arnie, nor is she supposed to be, but she's a great lead who comes off believable and likable. If Prey had have been released in the 80s, Amber's Naru would be up there with the iconic 80s female action stars.

I had such high hopes for this one. I thought it was a great idea but the execution was horrible. It was so cheezy that I couldn't finish it. The worst film in the franchise with one of the best concepts. They just kept trying to force little woke agenda points into the movie and spoiled the whole thing.

maybe it should sound different considering they're from the 1700s and could be speaking a number of different dialects

@madrigalinc On that note, the english dialect in this movie, don't know for sure, but it seems pretty up to date, there's a still a 0.01% chance that they spoke like that in the 1700, especially Comanche tribes. Predator clicking-tongue dialect was spot on though.

I really do not see the hype for this movie. I mean just because this is one of the better predator films in the past couple additions does not mean it is great. A lackluster story, poor and awkward performances, janky CGI all creates a less than ideal experience. While I did enjoy the new and interesting setting, there was just not enough here for me to care.

Score: 45%
Verdict:: Poor

The movie is fine, the way people are hyping it up shows that either people had even lower expectations than I had or they are friends with Dan Trachtenberg. The plotting and the way it’s shot is definitely right out of a video game, even at 1 hour and 40 minutes it feels like forever.

I have two things to say about _Prey_ : (1) Watch the trailer and save yourself an hour and a half of complete boredom. (2) Do a Google Images search for "Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada" and you'll see the ONLY thing worth watching this movie for: breathtaking scenery (only seen in about three or four scenes throughout the movie). Apart from that, I have nothing positive to say about this. Unless you speak 3 languages (American English, Cherokee, and French) you'll miss a large chunk of the movie. The ending made absolutely no sense whatsoever. Another movie with all the ingredients of a great story, yet falls woefully short of its potential and becomes practially a joke with its conclusion. Utterly ridiculous.

Contrary to what Trakt shows, this is available on Hulu. Right now.

@hubes-0a31c592-8851-4ddf-8e72-a7a20966824a I agree on almost all points... But: subtitles solves the language problem.

@nescobar-a-lop-lop Because I'm hard of hearing, I always use subtitles. It's been too long since I watched this one but I don't remember if the subs covered all the languages or not; that may be why I had an issue with this film. On principle, I do agree with you 100%; I've just watched too many movies where the subtitles only covered the principle language being spoken through the movie. I don't remember about this one.

"It knows how to hunt. But I know how to survive."

Amber Midthunder is one bad-ass chick. Really loved her character here and I would love to see her in more action movies! Hopefully she'll be great in the Last Air-Bender!

Anyway Prey is the second best entry in the Predator franchise and a job well done by Dan Trachtenberg. I loved the setting, the violence and the lead character. I also kinda dug the predator helmet in this one. Lovely stuff. Seeing him slaughter that bear was epic. Hopefully they will make another Predator movie in a couple of years in another epic setting.

Still, I wish I could've watched this in the theater. I think it would add so much more.

Great saturday viewing though! And a must watch!

@itsikg - And they speak perfect English, complete with modern colloquialisms. I still can't imagine a Cherokee buck telling his tribe _"I gotta go take a squat."_

It was definitely a fun movie but it was hard to ignore how "powerful" the main character was. They literally made all the characters by the end of movie bow down to her and tell her how much smarter and stronger she was the whole time despite not being a skilled hunter more less at all in the whole duration of the movie. She also almost drowned in a mud pit that she later tricked predator into falling into. This movie had some really cool visuals and slightly comedic moments but I cant help but think it could have easily been an 8 or 9 with a little less modern day failed writing techniques. Final thoughts would be that its a fun movie not a great one. They should have taken a tasteful alien approach to a strong female lead instead of the 2022 approach and don't even get me started on the hatchet on a string physics. 6 or 7/10
