Excellent documentary about the non-peak years of a phenomenally gifted - perhaps the most gifted musician of our times - that puts into context the strange decisions made in the 1990s before he resurfaced as an elder statesman of music in the mid-2000s.

On the downside there are seldom snippets of his music - due to licensing I'm sure - and lots of the incidental music is made to sound like Prince but is clearly not at the Prince level.

For anyone who knows the hits, this is essential viewing.

You realise how much of a visionary he was and how all the decisions he made might have liked steange at the time, but looking back at his career as a whole now, you see he left a far richer history than he needed to.

He could have released Purple Rain 2, 3, 4 and 5 - like Bon Jovi released the same music for 20 years to great success - but instead he was happy to follow his muse and release music that added to his legacy rather than seeking only sales.

It's long but it's well worth the watch.
