Ten-year-old Johnny stands out from his family and his tough neighborhood in Eastern France. He's sensitive, intelligent and interested in all kinds of things way beyond his years. With curiosity, he observes the ups and downs of his young single mother's turbulent love life. Things change when a new teacher, fresh from the big city, takes over Johnny's class. Mr. Adamski believes in Johnny and wants to open a new world to him. The sophisticated young teacher also intrigues the boy.

[AtlàntidaFF '22] It is a brave and risky proposal about the sensation of being trapped in a certain social space in which the vital destiny is already decided. Resistance to immobility is the motivation of Jhonny, whose insight also confuses his feelings. There is an outstanding precision in the description of the relationship between children and adults that recalls the subtlety of "L'enfance nue" (1968).

Like trying to scrape the last bit of peanut butter out of the bottom of the jar with the tip of the knife: there's some good stuff in here, but not enough to go around. This touching story of a soft spoken, 10-year-old broken home victim who begins to stalk his favorite teacher is good, just not thick enough for the 93 minutes it's meant to cover. Especially if they're not going to give more of that screen time to the amazing Izïa Higelin.

There's nothing new about a gay coming of age film. We've seen good ones before. Yet, this one has a peculiar and very real twist that makes it special. The story is told beautifully by Samuel Theis, and Aliocha Reinert is just incredible in this role.
