This movie is absolutely outstanding! This is possibly one of the most brutal and gut-wrentching films I've seen in the past 5 years. This is one holocaust movie that refrains from sugar coating. The main character of the film has the duty to burn the corpses of his own people. Throughout the film, he searches for a rabbi to bury a young boy he calls his son. Now with any film involving historical tragedies I think it's important to look past any pandering to emotions and instead judge the film on its own merits. It's not a great film because "it agrees the holocaust was a bad thing. It's great because of how it was executed. This film has one of the best uses of framing and focal length that I've ever seen. The majority of the film stays close to the main character. All of these horrible atrocities are being performed around him and for teh most part you only see tit happening in the background. And not only refraining from emphasising those events make it much more brutal and real. But there's a truly disturbing and off-putting feeling that comes from never being able to escape that perspective -much like the aspect ratio of the film making us feel more trapped. When a film doesn't go out of its way to shove each moment of action in your face, but instead allows you to observe it, it makes it easy to forget that you're actually watching a film. Many of the shots involving dozens of extras and precise coordinated actions went on seamlessly for several minutes. So not only does that also add to the realism, but it makes the film a much more impressive one at that. It's difficult to believe that this is the director's first feature-length film. It's difficult to believe that this is the director's first feature-length film. The only minor issue I have with the film involves passage of time and makeup. But, otherwise, the film is virtually flawless. I would highly recommend you see this film as soon as you can, and it looks like it's getting some sort of an American release in December. It's brutal, uncompromising, and really fucking impressive.
