Didn't have high hopes, and thank god. Still sad to see yet another fan favourite video game character be ruined by the adaption to film.

It's bad, and mostly because of the script. The story is awful and is very inconsistent. Sonic can run around loops and jump on missiles in mid-air but can't run up a slightly tilted wall? Also the amount of force-feeding of exposition they give in the first third is so bad. Not to mention the non-original and unneeded "Ya, that's me, how did I get here?" trope at the very beginning. The writers clearly didn't care how their story would be so generic and fall into the background because Sonic would draw people in. Like, in the action scenes, people should be dead. But, when you look around the streets, there's no one there. It honestly feels very empty throughout.

It feels like a rushed and cheap way to give a character that has been prevalent in the gaming community for almost 30 years a film. It really seems like they found someone's fanfiction and made it into a motion picture. Because if the first trailer was anything to go off of, they probably saw Sonic fanart on DeviantArt and thought that's what he looked like.

But speaking of looks, some positives. The colours work well, the art direction is okay and cinematography ain't half bad. The production design is pretty good and we all know Sonic looks much like himself again. As for a score, I don't remember it. Flat sad music is all that comes to mind.

I truly believe hardly anyone cared about this project, and that goes for the actors as well. I was kinda intrigued by how Jim Carrey would play the role here. After his great show _Kidding_ where he used his over the top acting in a profound way. I was hoping to see it continue with this weird eccentric character. But no, it's just the old Jim Carrey again. His ability to move the way he does did seem to fit right in my mind, but when he spoke it just didn't work. Plus, the way he was written is so lazy.

I laughed once, right near the end at that damn Fitbit joke. The tonal shift of that character and her delivery honestly caught me off-guard. The best part of the movie.

Not the worst video game movie, but certainly not improving the general view on them either.

@corruptednoobie I think it’s actually faithful. Watch the Smurfs and then this. Hollywood has made worse adaptations.

@somecallmebearby Some way worse. Some way better. You can get entertainment value out of this if it's your thing. But the fact of the matter is, I didn't. The CGI may have been fixed, but the story wasn't. It is just Alvin and the Chipmunks, Hop or like the other commenter said; The Smurfs. Uninteresting fish out of water stories that appeal to the mainstream teenager demographic with the cute characters and simple to follow plot. This film also had the added benefit of having a very passionate fanbase behind it. And if it did not have that, I'd say it would have passed by as another one of those movies I mentioned as forgettable.

This is just my opinion and everyone else can have their own. As I strongly urge people to make their own judgements on movies. I just like to share my takes on films.

Sonic was just so absolutely cute in this adaptation- and can we just appreciate how they didn’t go with the original design? I really wouldn’t be as empathetic to sonic as I am terrified of him if that happened..
Anywho, as some pointed out, it’s inconsistent in relation to Sonics powers. He can stop time (kinda), u will see rockets which r faster than the reaction of the human body, being stopped while Eggmans finger is moving slowly (which shouldn’t be moving at all) towards the button. Other times u will probably wonder why the heck doesn’t Sonic just go superspeed on Eggmans drones and inventions rather than just letting them hit him and almost kill him at LEAST 3 times.
BUT it’s a cartoon, if physics and common sense don’t work then why the heck is an English talking blue hedgehog who has lightning in his FUR and can be named The Flash from another world, with a ring that increases in size and delivers its handler to wherever they can think of (dimension or city) even existing?

Am just super happy of how it turned out, even more happy because of the disadvantages the team had overcame to deliver this movie HOW WE LIKE IT. It could’ve been worse, but this movie did stand out to me cuz the endless empathetic scenes that sonic has. I just wanna hold the damn creature and hug the living lights out of him. Kinda sad they won’t benefit from merch as sonic isn’t exactly an original character of theirs so their hard work has to come from the money of cinemas or movie purchase. Idk if there r other mediums ppl get money for their released movies but u get what I mean).

We all thought Assassin Creed was going to destroy the curse of terrible video game adaptations, but this blue hedgehog sure did.

You know what stuck with me the most was how Sonic says he has watched the 1994 action movie 'Speed' loads of times, so does that mean he witnessed Dennis Hopper getting decapitated on endless repeat? Or how about Beth Grant being run over by a bus?

Makes you think sometimes.

Anywhere...not a great movie, but man this could have been so much worst. I am glad the studios listened to fans and changed that revolting character design on Sonic. It is just too bad that the animates were laid off after the studio was closed. Yikes.

Jim Carry, even at the age of 58, has not lost that chaotic energy. Robotnik's dance scene was easily the highlight. What is more impressive is Carry improvised the dance scene and recommended the song "Where Evil Grows".

James Marsden sure does love cgi animals. I guess this completes the trilogy. 'Enchanted', 'Hop', and now 'Sonic'. Still likable and talented though.

So yeah, it's an average family adventure comedy that never failed to entertain. This is coming from a guy who is not a diehard fan of the character or game series, but still found some enjoyment out of it.

I had high expectation for Sonic, simply because I love the concept of "super-speed" but it didn't deliver. The latest trailer had all the good scenes. A lot of scenes involving super-speed are incoherent and made no sense. You cannot have a missile frozen in time and a the same time a button push going faster (that's just one example). Jim Carrey nailed the role as Eggman.

In what could only be a dead-of-winter miracle in the Upside Down, I just saw an inspired-by a video game movie that wasn’t absolutely terrible. There is nothing about “Sonic the Hedgehog” that seems like it will be watchable, much less actually good, but I’ve been proven wrong by this lively, wacky, and campy family film. There’s oodles of fun to be had here by both adults and kids.

This live action adventure comedy is based on the blockbuster SEGA game that centers around a speedy bright blue hedgehog named Sonic. Basing a movie on a flimsy gaming character will be ill-advised at least 95% of the time, but this movie finds the ideal balance between a lively (if basic) original story and well-placed Easter eggs for fans. Here, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) has a series of misadventures on Earth with his newfound human friend Tom (James Marsden), a small-town police officer. The two have to work together to stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic for his evil experiments.

The themes of friendship and loneliness are at play, and the cast does a great job keeping things fun. Marsden is ridiculously likable and goofy as an everyman, and Schwartz brings an empathy that carries the majority of the film with his voice performance. Best of all is Carrey, hamming it up with a manic stamina that’ll remind you why you always loved him in the first place.

There are plenty of action scenes and rude humor (and a couple of strange, over-the-top scenes that read as advertisements for Olive Garden), which are all entertaining enough to recommend “Sonic” for a fun family night out at the movies.
