Southpaw is a 2015 American Drama about a boxer named Billy Hope (Played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who is at the peak of his career when a series of tragic events happen in which he must come back and redeem himself in order to coupe with these trajeties. Now i'll first of all say I haven't watched too many boxing films, and one of the gripes many have with this movie is the fact that that it's not too ambitious and pretty run of the mill for a fighting/boxing movie. Personally, aside from the end I couldn't really pull too many clichè's out so that aspect didn't bother me. However this might take enjoyment out of the movie for other. Aside from that, Southpaw is a very well directed and well acted emotionally pulling film. Gyllenhaal who just a few months ago knocked it out of the park in his role in Nightcrawler does it again. He transforms his body and personality to make the part. When you're watching the movie you don't see Jake Gyllenhaal playing Billy Hope..you see the character of Billy Hope. Yes, he's that good. The supporting cast were great as well, 50 cent, though his characters intentions were a little cloudy did a great job in his role. Forest Widicker impressed with a great and emotional performance, as well as Billy Hopes daughter in the movie (who's name I do not know) brought alot here. Though short lived, Rachel McAdams did a very good job in her roll and had great chemistry with Gyllenhaal. Aside from a few small gripes with the character arcs, I can't really think of any problems I had with this movie. The fighting scenes were intense and believable..I was skeptical in the beginning, but after about thirty seconds i was sold. The movie was very believable and emotionally heartbreaking. I wouldn't go as far as calling it depressing, but our protagonist goes through hell and Gyllenhaal sells it so well, which is why I was so invested and pulled in to the movie..which even made me get glassy eyed. The story is executed very well, paying off at the end with no loose ends and overall having no pacing issues or parts in the story that were boring. The final fifthteen minutes had me on the edge of my seat and overall I think the movie was great, if you're looking to see the movie in theaters please give this film your money over Pixels, which was also released this weekend. Overall (for me) 9/10. If you liked my review give me a follow!
