By the time TNG was about to be finishing it´s TV-run it was already established that there would be a movie following shortly thereafter. Unfortunately I didn´t thought, and still don`t, that this movie was a great one. And I´m saying that being a huge Star Trek fan.

Technically this was above doubt. The crash sequence looks great even compared with todays movies. But the writing is nowhere near the quality that the show had established. The story in general wasn´t very deep and Soran was a weakly written charakter with little to no depth. On the other hand they wrote to many side stories: Picards loss, Datas Emotions, Lursa and B´tor who work with Soran in hopes to get a weapon to regain their power within the Empire. Either of this would have made for a good story in itself if discovered in more detail but here they all fight with the supposed "A" story and somehow they all take away from each other. Especially Data, finally, getting his emotion-chip after so many years was something that should not have been treated in such fashion.

And then there is the biggest issue for me: why bring back parts of the classic crew ? Don´t get me wrong, I love the original Star Trek, I liked the movies (some less, some more). But they´ve had their farewell, it was a chapter closed. TNG had long become a proven and very succesfull show that had shown beyond a doubt that they can stand their ground against the original. And now, after Picard and his crew had mastered numeros threats they get beaten by one Bird of Prey (am I the only one wondering why they didn´t changed their shield harmonic after the first shot?) and Picard needs Kirk of all people to again save the day. I felt that threw the TNG franchise back a bid. It´s like saying "You still can´t do without us" while in reality the torch had long been handed over.

Oh, and one other thing I wondered: why was the interior of the Enterprise suddenly so dark. They turned down almost all the lights. Did Starfleet issue an order to save energy ? Well, I guess since they were still using the sets from the TV show they needed to do this in order to cover up that the sets couldn´t stand the detail of the big screen.

Since in the end most of the things in "Generations" were done to lay the foundation for the next movies, and it worked out, everything´s fine. Financially it was a huge success so the legend lived on.
