The movie that propably had the most impact on my life.
I was little over 10 at the time I saw it first. My dad brought it home on VHS. From the first second my eyes were glued to the screen. Immediately after it was over I rewound the tape and watched it again which up to today, close to 35 later, I haven´t done with any other movie. I recorded it on audio tape so I could listen to it, even wrote down the whole thing on paper (that was well before the internet, folks). We re-ennacted the scenes, I had memorized every line. I cannot recall how many times I`ve seen it since then.
I would give it 11 if possible.

@finfan Thanks for sharing this nice story with us. I was very young as well, I watched it the first time when I was 5. They gave me a VHS I still have in my collection. Still my favourite episode. What about you? Which one is your favourite?

@andreas1138 I hope that tape is still working because that version is no longer available.

My favorite episode? Well, althought I love all of the original trilogy I have to go with ANH. Not only because of my experience and that it is in a way still the only movie that fired up my imagination. When I said we re-enacted the movie we also made props and costumes. That was early 80s, you could not go online and just buy stuff. You had to make do with what was readily available.
This movie was impossible to make before they actually did it. You can trace so many things in technology back to this movie. I think it inspired a lot of people one way or the other.

@finfan are you going to watch Solo? I really liked it (while I didn't like Rogue One at all, even if it is considered one of the best one). I finally had fun watching a Star Wars movie, like I did 26 years ago when I saw Episode 4 for the first time (I was 5 back then, a similar experience to yours, in VHS, a gift from a friend).
It's not a perfect movie, but I enjoyed it.

@andreas1138 No, I don`t want to. Ever since news broke about the spin-offs I showed little interest. Honestly, as much as I love Star Wars and was exited (at first) about the new movies I think Disneys Marvel approach is going too far. They are trying to squeeze every Dollar out of it and a SW movie each year is just too much. From what I hear Solo isn't doing well at the box office so I gather a lot of people are thinking the same. It might be a good movie after all but there is such a thing as oversaturation.

@andreas1138 If you are still interested in my opinion about Solo you can now read it up. But it is not a favorable one.

This came out in 1977, of course the spaceships and the special effects look so bad. I saw it for the first time yesterday and I liked it.

fan of the franchise but i kinda dislike this one. would probably have been better as a stand alone movie but the prequels and sequels kinda make it look bad (story doesn't add up). also, why didn't they show any emotion back then? (luke when his aunt and uncle were evaporated, leia when alderaan exploded). animation for the time pretty good and in the remastered versions even nowadays watchable. ..but why the hell would obi wan just teleport away and leave his robe? is he naked now? did he transform into a higher being just like that? is luke remembering or can obi wan speak to him as a ghost now? why did the deathstar fly around the planet instead of just evaporating it together with the rebel base and why is there not a single star destroyer to guard the nearly defenseless, hugely expensive death star? it gets weirder the more you think about the movie

I fell asleep thru parts of it. Not very engaging at all. Great for kids but not so much for adults. I liked it as a kid but now I’ve watched it again as an adult it disappoints.

A technical marvel and a great plot for its time. But, in the 21st century, it would be inaccurate to rate it any higher than **7.5/10**
People rating it 10/10, the force is too strong with those!

"Star Wars: A New Hope" is probably the single most fan-obsessed movie ever. It has no equal as far as being a part of our culture. I'm not a Star Wars nut but I am a fan. I just rewatched the theatrical version which I hadn't seen in probably 15 years. The thing that jumped out at me the most is the performance of Harrison Ford. His Han Solo has got to be one of the coolest characters in a movie ever. Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing really stood out to me this time as well. It's funny how the special effects of the original theatrical version are showing their age. They are a little rough in spots and maybe even a little crude at times but I love the practical effects. The pace of this movie is perfect and the simple relationships that the characters build along with the sometimes corny dialogue really do nothing but make the film more special. Even some 30 years from it original release it is a remarkably lovable film.

Luke's aunt and uncle are murdered and burned and he doesn't even flinch. Leia's entire planet (HER WHOLE WORLD) is destroyed and she doesn't display a single touch of sadness. Obi-Wan dies and no one really cares about it. Either the acting in this film is utterly terrible or everyone's a sociopath

Star Wars is the quintessential space opera, and a fun action film. This epic adventure follows Luke Skywalker as he joins former general Obi-Wan Kenobi on a mission to get a pair of droids, who are carrying top secret files, to the Rebel Alliance. The cast includes Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Alec Guinness, all of whom give solid performances; particularly Ford, who brings a lot of charisma to his role. The special effects and costumes holdup remarkably well, and have a sort of '70s sci-fi charm to them. Additionally, John Williams has crafted a brilliant score that masterfully conveys the energy and grandeur of the film. Star Wars inspired a generation, and is a landmark science fiction film that revived the genre.

If you wish to enter the Star Wars universe I highly recommend watching the Star Wars Despecialized Edition instead of the versions you find online. It is a hell of an improvement. No bad CGI nor filters. Just pure theatrical madness (or closed to it). That's the way to do it.
